Economists: Years of government assistance leaves Trinis too spoilt

THREE senior economists said on Thursday that decades of subsidies, transfers and other forms of government assistance – to the tune of tens of billions of dollars – have made citizens spoilt.

This view comes three days after the Minister of Finance Colm Imbert announced in the budget a further cut on subsidies in the price of fuel and consequent increase in the price of premium and super gasoline, each by a dollar per litre, and 50 cents per litre for diesel. Read more here…

4 illegal immigrants held in Santa Flora

Officers from the South Western Division intercepted four illegal immigrants and seized a quantity of illegal items during an anti-crime exercise conducted in the division on Wednesday.

A release from the TTPS said based on information received, the officers went to School Road, Santa Flora, near Mahawal Beach, where four Venezuelan immigrants were held. Read more here…

Cudjoe accuses ‘Express’ of twisting her words

Sport and Community Development Minister Shamfa Cudjoe yesterday accused the Express of twisting what she said at the opening of the $18 million Tacarigua Community Centre. You can always count on the Express, the media on a whole, to twist your comments out of context and try to create confusion, mayhem and discord. Yesterday (Wednesday) I spoke with the Tacarigua village council about the challenges of taking hard decisions and making sacrifices today that will redound to our benefit tomorrow and build a brighter future for our children. Former finance minister: What plans are in store for Petrotrin?

Former finance minister Mariano Browne has expressed concern that no mention was made about plans for the former Petrotrin refinery in Monday’s budget presentation.
The refinery was shut down by the Government in November 2018.
In June, Finance Minister Colm Imbert told the Lower House of Representatives that there was a preferred bidder, but they will remain unidentified until the due diligence process has been completed. Read more here…

NGC Groups reports significantly improved half-year performance

The NGC group of companies has recorded a net profit of TT$1.6B for the six months of the year ended June 30, 2022. This is a 260 per cent increase when compared to a profit of TT$437M in 2021.

The NGC group also noted its revenues of TT$16.6B were TT$7.1B greater than revenues of TT$9.5B for the same period in 2021. It explained the rebound in commodity prices positively impacted revenues and margins. According to the NGC prices of ammonia, methanol, liquefied natural gas and natural gas liquids (NGLs) increased by 185 per cent, four per cent, 457 per cent and 72 per cent respectively. Separatist leaders join other guests in Moscow for Putin's annexation ceremony

Guests have arrived in Moscow ahead of an annexation ceremony hosted by President Vladimir Putin on Friday, with attendees including Russian-backed leaders from four occupied Ukrainian territories. Read more here
