Petrotrin sued by former worker

State-owned Petrotrin has been sued by one of its former systems administrators for injuries he sustained when he slipped and fell on a wet floor at the company’s ICT building at Pointe-a-Pierre in 2016. Denzil Ramsahai, who worked in the human resources department, is claiming negligence on the part of Petrotrin, and is seeking compensation not only for his injuries but also for his wife’s loss of income since she had to leave her job to care for him. Cops arrest 11 illegal immigrants

Po­lice be­lieve they have made a dent in a thriv­ing hu­man traf­fick­ing ring af­ter ar­rest­ing 11 il­le­gal im­mi­grants dur­ing a raid ear­ly yes­ter­day. It is be­lieved a video cir­cu­lat­ing on so­cial me­dia, which showed peo­ple jump­ing off a pirogue and run­ning on­to shore at a beach in Erin, trig­gered a po­lice op­er­a­tion around 2 am. The op­er­a­tion took place at the Los Iros beach and was head­ed by Se­nior Supt Adams and in­clud­ed Supt Bas­deo, ac­cord­ing to a state­ment from the T&T Po­lice Ser­vice. A par­ty of of­fi­cers led by Sgt Cor­rie, of the Erin Po­lice Sta­tion, con­duct­ed a search of a ho­tel where sev­en male and four fe­male for­eign na­tion­als were found. Read more here

PM on Divali Nagar’s influence

Prime Min­is­ter Dr Kei­th Row­ley jus­ti­fied cut­backs in fund­ing for Di­vali Na­gar cel­e­bra­tions at the event’s clos­ing cer­e­mo­ny in Ch­agua­nas last night. How­ev­er, the PM point­ed out that the Di­vali Na­gar is a bea­con of hope and a bea­con of the ex­pres­sion of the best in T&T. In de­liv­er­ing the fea­ture ad­dress, Row­ley said cuts were made in all ar­eas of na­tion­al spend­ing, in­clud­ing op­er­a­tions at the Min­istry of Na­tion­al Se­cu­ri­ty. Read more here

CinemaOne IPO raises $14m

Cin­e­maONE Gem­stone 4DX CEO and di­rec­tor In­grid Jahra is pleased the com­pa­ny has raised near­ly half of some $30.8 mil­lion it is seek­ing from its first ini­tial pub­lic of­fer­ing (IPO). The com­pa­ny, the first to be list­ed on the Small and Medi­um En­ter­prise Mar­ket on the Trinidad and To­ba­go Stock Ex­change, of­fered an ini­tial 3,088,373 shares but sold 1,444,168 at $10 per share. Cin­e­maONE’s IPO has there­fore raised over $14 mil­lion but was un­der­sub­scribed by just over 50 per cent. The IPO is now closed af­ter it was ex­tend­ed for an ad­di­tion­al week. Petrojam In Spotlight Again! - Gov't Asked If Company Is Owed US$3 Million By Firm That Filed For Bankruptcy In US

Jamaica's parliamentary Opposition has sought answers from the Andrew Holness administration about whether the state-owned oil refinery Petrojam is owed more than J$380 million by a Greek fuel-trading company that filed for bankruptcy protection in the United States (US) yesterday. Phillip Paulwell, the opposition spokesman on energy, said his information is that Aegean Marine Petroleum owes Petrojam US$3 million, or approximately J$381 million, and that the debt was unsecured. "The House leader (Karl Samuda, leader of government business in the House of Representatives) could verify if they are aware of this development and to confirm the outstanding amount owed to Petrojam," said Paulwell, who was speaking in Parliament late yesterday. House Democrats ascendant, set to check Trump's power

Democrats on Tuesday captured the House of Representatives and are set to exert a major institutional check on President Donald Trump, while breaking the Republican monopoly on power and ushering in a younger, more female and more racially diverse political generation. But the GOP solidified their Senate majority after an acerbic midterm election that enshrined America's deep divides and shaped a highly contentious battleground for the stirring 2020 presidential race. The opposite trends in the House and the Senate underscored a political and cultural gulf among diverse and affluent liberals living in big cities and their suburbs and the mostly, white, working class and rural conservative bloc of voters for whom Trump remains an iconic figure. Cameroon kidnap: Bamenda students freed

Students kidnapped from a boarding school in Cameroon's North-West region have been freed, officials say. The 78 students and three others were seized early on Sunday in the region's capital, Bamenda. A driver was also released, but the school's principal and a teacher are still being held. The government and separatists in the English-speaking region have been accusing each other of being behind the kidnapping. Read more here
