TTMA and First Citizens team up to tackle gender-based violence

The T&T Manufacturers’ Association (TTMA) in collaboration with the First Citizens’ Advancement of Women (AOW) Committee donated electronic items to the Gender-Based Violence Unit (GBVU) of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS). This comes as the final tranche of infrastructural items required to outfit two of the units located at the Sangre Grande and Roxborough stations respectively, following previous donations from PriceSmart, VF Packaging Ltd, Advance Foam Ltd and TTMA. Mixed reactions from parents on physical classes as younger students return to schools

While many parents have expressed their comfort with their children’s return to the face-to-face environment, several are still apprehensive about it. Lower secondary school students, forms one-three, and primary-school students in standard five preparing for their Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) exams returned to school on Monday, some of them walking through the gates of their secondary schools for the first time in two years. Fire destroys nine Bamboo businesses

A devastating fire has destroyed nine automotive businesses in Bamboo Number Two yesterday. The fire started just after 5 pm as a loud explosion was heard coming from one of the businesses. Fire officials were up to late attempting to extinguish parts of the massive blaze that kept reigniting challenging fire officials at the scene. The damage is said to be in the multi-millions of dollars. Read more here

UNC wins Debe South by landslide, PEP beats PNM

The UNC secured another political victory on Monday night as its candidate in the debe south by election won the district by a landslide. The UNC's Khemraj Seecharan secured 1,650 votes, way ahead of his opponents. Progressive Empowerment Party (PEP) candidate Lorenzo Sammy captured 175 votes while the PNM's Judy Sookdeo was only able to attract 25 votes . Read more here

WITCO welcomes new deputy chairman

The West Indian Tobacco Company (Witco) announced that it has appointed Ingrid Lashley as deputy chairman, effective February 1. The company made the announcement in a media release on Monday. Lashley is the former managing director and CEO of the TT Mortgage Finance Company Ltd (TTMF), prior to which she spent 18 years at Scotiabank, where she held several positions including the general manager of Scotiatrust and Merchant Bank TT Ltd. State challenges payment sought by CLF

The Appeal Court has reserved its ruling in a procedural appeal filed by the Office of the Attorney General against the ruling of a High Court judge to approve the fees claimed by the joint liquidators of CL Financial (CLF) for their work done in 2019. For almost four hours yesterday, attorneys representing CLF and the AG’s Office were in debate before Justices of Appeal Prakash Moosai and Charmaine Pemberton over the ruling of Justice Kevin Ramcharan last July. $7.3 Billion approved for Office of the President

With multiple major agencies falling under the Office of the President for budget purposes, the Committee of Supply of the National Assembly approved $7.3 Billion on Monday for its operations as part of Appropriation Bill No. 1 of 2022. The Bill, otherwise referred to as Budget 2022, made its way to the Committee of Supply for consideration of the estimates and expenditure of the various agencies, following five intense days of policy debates last week on the $552 Billion budgeted allocation for the year. INTERNATIONAL

Ukraine crisis: Macron says crucial days ahead after Putin summit

French President Emmanuel Macron has said the coming days will be crucial to de-escalating the Ukraine standoff, after five hours of talks with Russia's Vladimir Putin. Mr Putin hinted progress had been made during his first Moscow summit with a Western leader since Russian troops massed close to Ukraine's borders. Moscow has denied any plans to invade. However, Western powers have become increasingly concerned by the possibility of a conflict. Read more here
