The father of the child who was killed in a jet ski collision in Tobago in April says the instruction to lay a manslaughter charge against a suspect has brought a measure of relief to his family, although it cannot ease the pain of losing his daughter. Speaking to the Express yesterday after learning that Director of Public Prosecutions, Roger Gaspard, SC, had instructed that a Tobago man be charged with manslaughter, Arnold Jogie, the grieving father of Angelica Saydee Jogie said the development marked an important step in the pursuit of justice. Businesses in Trinidad and Tobago looking to modernise their operations are being urged to move faster into cloud technology, as Liberty Business and Amazon Web Services (AWS) deepen their partnership to bring enterprise-grade cloud services closer to the local market. The message came from Simone Martin-Sulgan, vice president and general manager of Flow T&T, during the official launch of Liberty Business and AWS Cloud Services at The Forge Culinary Studio last week. Tancoo rejects Sagicor tax position
Sagicor Financial Company has advised customers that certain corporate pension plans remain subject to income tax, a position Finance Minister Davendranath Tancoo says is inconsistent with the Government’s new tax exemption for private pension plans. Asked about the issue by the Express, Tancoo said corporate pension plans fall within the definition of private pension plans and are therefore exempt from income tax. “A private pension plan is inclusive of a corporate pension plan; therefore, it’s tax-exempt,” Tancoo said via WhatsApp. Read more here

New HEART initiative to coordinate long-term support for MV Barima survivors, families
PRESIDENT, Dr Irfaan Ali has announced the creation of a new national body to coordinate long-term support for survivors and families affected by the MV Barima tragedy, promising that Guyana’s compassion will not fade once the headlines do. The vessel, carrying passengers and crew from Georgetown to Port Kaituma, capsized after a distress call was received on the night of July 18, triggering one of the largest maritime search-and-rescue operations in Guyana’s history, with support from the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard, local agencies, private vessels, international partners, and specialist diving teams from France, Brazil and Trinidad and Tobago. In the days that followed, President Ali declared three days of national mourning, with the Golden Arrowhead flown at half-staff on government buildings across the country, alongside a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance at the Kingston Seawall, followed by nights of reflection in Port Kaituma and Mabaruma. Zelensky to press Trump on air defences while in Washington
Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky is due to hold important talks with US President Donald Trump at the White House, where he is hoping to firm up commitments to bolstering Kyiv's anti-ballistic missile defences. Zelensky has arrived in the US at a significant stage in Russia's full-scale war in Ukraine, with Moscow's mayor saying the capital was targeted by 390 drones in a matter of hours overnight. The Ukrainian leader is expected to press Trump over support he gave earlier this month for Kyiv to be given a licence to produce Patriot interceptor missiles. Read more here
