Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers to Launch Miami Trade Mission in 2026
The Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers Association will lead a delegation of manufacturers and e business leaders to South Florida Sept. 13-18, 2026. The purpose is a trade mission aimed at expanding commercial ties between Trinidad and Tobago businesses and the United States. The mission will bring companies from the food and beverage, beauty and personal care, household products, technology, manufacturing, energy and related sectors to Miami. They will attend targeted business-to-business meetings, market visits, educational sessions and strategic introductions. The effort is designed to connect Trinidad and Tobago companies with qualified U.S. buyers, distributors, importers, retailers, wholesalers, logistics providers, investors and strategic partners. Skywatchers urged to look up tonight as
Skywatchers across Trinidad and Tobago may want to stay up a little later tonight, as one of the year’s more impressive celestial shows unfolds directly overhead. A deep partial lunar eclipse will be visible across the country overnight, tonight into tomorrow, with almost the entire Moon slipping into the darkest part of Earth’s shadow. And unlike a solar eclipse, there is no need for special glasses; just look up. The eclipse begins at 9.23 pm today, when the Moon starts entering the lighter outer portion of Earth’s shadow, known as the penumbra. At first, the change may be difficult to notice. The real show begins at about 10.33 pm, when the partial eclipse gets underway, and Earth’s much darker umbral shadow begins moving across the Moon. Read more here
Silent fireworks for Savannah
Silent fireworks will be used during this year’s Independence Day celebrations as the Government seeks to reduce the impact of the traditional displays on people living near the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port of Spain. The fireworks display will form part of the evening’s cultural showcase, which will begin at 5 p.m. on August 31. Speaking at a news conference at Temple Court, along Abercromby Street, Port of Spain, yesterday, Jerome Lewis, communications strategist at the Ministry of Culture and Community Development, said the programme would include pan, calypso, soca, chutney, tassa, folk and other cultural presentations. Alexander claims he has ‘shocking’ documents linked to PNM corruption allegations
Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander says he has seen “shocking” documents connected to corruption allegations raised by San Fernando East MP Brian Manning against members of his own People’s National Movement (PNM), but is refusing to disclose how the information came into his possession. Alexander made the revelation while speaking with members of the media at a ceremony to commemorate the relocation of the Princes Town Fire Station to King Street, Princes Town, yesterday. Asked whether police should investigate the allegations emerging from the increasingly bitter dispute in San Fernando East, Alexander said any credible suggestion of corruption involving taxpayers’ money warranted scrutiny. “Any place where corruption raises its ugly head should be investigated because it’s public funds,” Alexander said. Angostura shareholders want focus on $984M debt
Angostura shareholder and minority shareholder advocate Peter Permell is urging fellow shareholders to turn out in large numbers for today’s annual meeting and vote against the re-election of director Jennifer Frederick, while putting the company’s nearly $1 billion claim against CL Financial back under the spotlight. Permell said he intended to raise what he described as “a very critical issue of mutual importance” concerning the actions of a particular director and how they related to Angostura’s inability to recover the approximately $984 million owed by CL Financial before it was placed into liquidation. He maintained that, given what had been alleged, the director should have resigned last year and argued that she still had the option of withdrawing her nomination rather than facing rejection at the meeting. Barbados forges ahead with renewable energy
The Barbados government says it is advancing a major programme of battery energy storage, grid modernisation and regulatory reform as the country works towards achieving 50% renewable energy penetration by the end of 2027. In addition, Bridgetown has introduced an expedited licensing and grid-connection pathway aimed at bringing an estimated 33.1 megawatts (MW) of existing solar photovoltaic capacity fully onto Barbados’ electricity grid. World Bank reaffirms support for Guyana’s development
President Dr Irfaan Ali on Wednesday met with World Bank Division Director for the Caribbean Achim Fock at State House, where discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between Guyana and the international financial institution. According to President Ali, the World Bank team reiterated its commitment to working with the Government to advance cooperation and partnerships in several critical areas of national development. These include health, education, poverty reduction, housing, flood mitigation and food security. Read more here

US drug agency approves breakthrough treatment for pancreatic cancer
The US Food and Drug Administration has approved a treatment for pancreatic cancer that, in clinical trials, nearly doubled the overall survival time for patients. The drug, daraxonrasib, sold under the brand name Rasonque and manufactured by Revolution Medicines, appears to be a breakthrough in treating one of the world's deadliest cancers. A late-stage clinical trial with 500 patients found those who took the daily pill had an average survival time of 13.2 months, compared to 6.6 months for those on chemotherapy. The FDA said the drug provided a "critical new option for patients facing an extraordinarily difficult and historically hard-to-treat cancer". Read more here
