Strangled and dumped at sea
After nine days of searching land and sea for two-year-old Angelo Tobias-Plaza, police say a suspect has confessed to murdering the child and disposing of the body at sea. The toddler was reported missing from his Goodwood home around 7.30 pm on May 11. After desperate searches at the Studley Park landfill and Pig Farm Road, Goldsborough, for nine days turned up empty-handed, cops returned yesterday to where it all began — Angelo’s home on Cambridge Trace. Police said a close male relative confessed to strangling the child and throwing his body into the sea. The suspect was taken to Cambridge Trace yesterday around 8 am after he gave investigating officers key evidence on the child’s disappearance. He was later whisked away as police cordoned off the area leading to the child’s home to refocus their search for the child. Read more here

Camille, Saddam trade words over procurement and housing projects
A war of words has erupted between former housing minister Camille Robinson-Regis and Land and Legal Affairs Minister Saddam Hosein over the Beaucarro and Allamby housing development projects, as well as comments relating to the Office of the Procurement Regulator (OPR). Robinson-Regis raised concerns about the lands involved yesterday, while also criticising Hosein’s remarks suggesting that the OPR ignored or neglected complaints during the People’s National Movement’s (PNM) tenure, and that the OPR board “will soon have many questions to answer,” with comparisons to be made between its handling of current matters and those under the PNM administration. Her comments came after Moruga resident Edward Collins filed a complaint with the OPR regarding the Beaucarro, Couva, development being undertaken by LandmarkTT. Read more here

Regional rums seek global rebound
The Caribbean rum industry is currently navigating a period of adjustment as producers contend with post-pandemic economic challenges, evolving trade conditions, and uneven demand across key international markets. Despite these pressures, the West Indies Rum and Spirits Producers Association (WIRSPA) remains confident in the long-term outlook for premium Caribbean rum. This optimism is underpinned by a renewed focus on exports, innovation and expansion into emerging markets. At a reception hosted by Angostura at the Hyatt Regency on Monday evening, WIRSPA’s CEO, Vaughn Renwick, emphasised to the Business Guardian that the organisation’s priority lies in regional collaboration and international market development, rather than involvement in domestic policy issues. ‘T&T’s real future lies in non-energy exports’
Trinidad and Tobago’s future economic stability rests “90 to 95%” on non-energy exports, university professor Dr Roger Hosein said yesterday as he cautioned against treating the International Monetary Fund’s latest 2026 Article IV Consultation as a full IMF report. Speaking on TV6’s Morning Edition programme yesterday, Hosein said there needed to be caution in how the IMF document was characterised, stressing that it was an “executive concluding statement” and not a full IMF report. Gov’t actively exploring new tools to cushion global inflation – President Ali
President Dr. Irfaan Ali has signalled that the Government is examining a new suite of measures to protect Guyanese from future fuel price shocks, noting that the main tax lever used in recent years has now been fully exhausted. In a broadcast address on Tuesday night, discussing the ongoing energy and cost-of-living pressures brought on by the conflict in the Middle East, Dr. Ali said his administration had already deployed “the full policy tool” available on fuel taxation by cutting the excise tax on refined imports to zero, saving consumers hundreds of billions of dollars since 2022.
