MANDATORY BODY CAMS UNDER ZOSO
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says police officers conducting operations in designated special zones will be required to wear body cameras under the Government’s revised Zones of Special Operations (ZOSO) legislation. Speaking in the House of Representatives yesterday, Persad-Bissessar said Government intends to debate a revised version of the Law Reform (Zones of Special Operations) (Special Security and Community Development Measures) Bill, 2026 tomorrow, hours after the State of Emergency (SoE) expires at midnight tonight (September 17). NCRHA launches 2 golf carts for easier access at Mt Hope
The North Central Regional Health Authority yesterday launched two eight-seater golf carts at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC), Mt Hope, to help patients. The golf carts will be positioned at clinic areas and the main entrance to transport patients to and from the car park, the NCRHA stated in a release. “The service will make it easier for patients, families and staff who need assistance to move around the large hospital complex. “The initiative is expected to be beneficial to elderly patients, particularly those who are immobile, those with limited mobility and members of the public who have difficulty moving across the compound,” the release stated. Sunset clause, power to President among changes in new bill
Although Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar told Parliament that officers operating in designated closed areas “must use” body-worn cameras, the Government’s newly introduced Special Operations Bill does not make their use mandatory in every circumstance. The legislation, published online just hours after the Prime Minister’s statement yesterday, provides that a police officer or member of the Defence Force “shall, as far as is possible having regard to available resources, use a body-worn camera” while conducting special operations in a closed area. That qualification means the requirement remains contingent on the availability of body cameras and other resources. The provision mirrors wording contained in the Government’s previous Zones of Special Operations (ZOSO) Bill, which stated that members of the joint force were required to use body-worn cameras “as far as is possible having regard to available resources.” Read more here
PM, Moonilal won’t be allowed to ‘rewrite history’
As the Government seeks to repair diplomatic relations with Venezuela, former prime minister and energy minister Stuart Young yesterday claimed that Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Energy and Energy Industries Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal would not be allowed to “rewrite history”. When he attended an event in La Brea on Tuesday, Moonilal referenced Trinidad and Tobago’s relations with the South American country, claiming that Foreign and Caricom Affairs Minister Sean Sobers had done a “major job” in repairing what he said was damage done by the former People’s National Movement (PNM) administration. ‘This is a healthy economy’
President Dr Irfaan Ali has hailed a surge in bank accounts, rising credit and deep liquidity as signs of growing confidence and financial inclusion. Speaking during a press conference earlier this week, the President disclosed an expansion in banking activity, with 179,758 new accounts opened between October 2024 and August 2026, saying the surge reflects rising confidence and wider financial inclusion in a rapidly growing economy. Citing data from six commercial banks and two non-bank deposit-taking institutions, the President told reporters that 96 per cent of the new accounts were opened in the formal banking sector, following Government moves to ease requirements for ordinary Guyanese to open accounts. Between October 2024 and March 2026, 119,807 accounts were opened, with a further 59,951 added from April to August 2026 alone. Read more here

India faces 100% tariff threat over Russian oil after US House vote
For four years, India, one of the world's biggest oil importers, has turned Russia's war-driven disruption of global oil markets to its advantage. Russian crude, displaced from western markets after the invasion of Ukraine, has flowed instead to Indian refineries, often at attractive discounts. The arrangement has lowered the cost of one of India's biggest imports and given its refiners an abundant source of crude. Now that bargain is becoming a source of geopolitical risk. Read more here
