Pensioner, daughter beaten, robbed during home invasion
Still traumatised after a two-hour home invasion, a 72-year-old woman is calling for tougher action against criminals. The pensioner was among several victims of violent home invasions reported across South Trinidad over the past week. Speaking at her St Margaret’s Village home yesterday, the woman, who requested anonymity, said she fears the bandits who attacked her and her daughter could return. She recalled that she and her daughter went to bed around 11 pm on Sunday. They were sleeping in separate beds in the same room when two masked intruders entered the house through a window after removing several louvre panes. Crying as she recounted the ordeal, she said, “I felt a hand over my mouth, and they said if I bawl, they would kill me right away. They were also telling her (my daughter), ‘I will kill your mother if you don’t cooperate.’ She had to stay quiet like a lamb.” Read more here

Moonilal: Data tells us UNC on right path with SoE extension
Energy Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal has called on the People's National Movement to support the extension of the State of Emergency (SoE), as the data has showed “we’re on the right path.” He dismissed the view that Government is hiding from the public. “We had a function with 10,000 people. We can walk anywhere, any place, any constituency. I’m sometimes tired turning down invitations to go all over the place. People embrace us and say they’re happy to see us and that we’re doing a wonderful job,” Moonilal said last night during debate on a motion to extend the SoE “We walk through the malls all the time, Sundays I go for doubles - we go all over.” Moonilal, who said Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro is the most people-friendly CoP, detailed statistics showing crime dropping by 40 per cent. Moonilal said if Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar hadn’t taken the step she had, T&T would have been run by criminals. Read more here

Trump says 'I love the inflation' as US prices rise at fastest rate in three years
President Donald Trump has said "I love the inflation" after official figures showed that US prices rose last month at their fastest rate for three years. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) figures for May showed that prices had gone up by 4.2% over the previous 12 months. The rate of increase, from 3.8% in April, was driven by rising energy costs in the wake of the US-Israel war in Iran. "I love it. The numbers were great. You know what I really love? I love the inflation," Trump said at the White House. Read more here
