PM reacts to killing of police corporal but insists no need for curfew; nationwide search for 62 guns, ammo stolen from armoury

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says there is no need for a curfew following the killing of a municipal police officer at the San Fernando City Corporation Municipal Police Station on King’s Wharf. In a statement yesterday, Persad-Bissessar said she had been advised that the incident at the station was not an external attack on the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) or other national security agencies. Instead, she said it was an “internal betrayal” within the Trinidad and Tobago Municipal Police Service (TTMPS). She stressed that the TTPS is a separate entity from the TTMPS and said TTPS officers were not involved in the incident. The Prime Minister said the Ministry of Homeland Security and the TTPS would provide full support to the municipal police service, San Fernando Mayor Robert Parris and the San Fernando City Corporation to investigate the matter, recover the stolen items and bring the situation to closure. OVER 430 residents from several communities along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway on Monday received their official leases for their lands, and, according to President Dr. Irfaan Ali, this is just one of many land regularisation programmes being pursued in the area. The Head of State, while addressing scores of residents, said the government’s intention is to support livelihoods through sustainable housing and long-term wealth creation. “The very fact that you own your lease now has increased your worth by over 400 per cent, overnight. You can take that to the bank, you can get a loan, you can build your home, and the value of land in this area is growing exponentially,” the President said. Read more here

The insider trading suspicions looming over Trump's presidency

Throughout US President Donald Trump's second term in office, traders have been betting millions of dollars just before he makes major announcements. The BBC has examined trade volume data on several financial markets and matched them to some of the president's most significant market-moving statements. It found a consistent pattern of spikes just hours, or sometimes minutes, before a social media post or media interview was made public. Some analysts say it bears the hallmarks of illegal insider trading, whereby bets are made by people based on information that is not available to the general public. Read more here
