Nestle moves to expand manufacturing in T&T

Nestle intends to expand manufacturing at its T&T factory through renewed investments in the dairy and the dairy alternative industries. This was revealed by both the incumbent and incoming Market Head of Nestle for the Caribbean Region, Patrico Torres and Josué de La Maza, who met with Trade Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon on Monday. Tobago woman dies of COVID; family says she ‘just had a runny nose’

Two more people died of COVID-19 in Tobago in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of COVID- related deaths to 39. A 62-year-old woman without comorbidities, and an 81-year-old man, with comorbidities, died on Monday night. According to the woman’s children, their mother Ingrid George of Plymouth, who recently retired from the Kendall Farm School, was “healthy and just had a runny nose.” They say they expected her to return home. They are now warning the public to take all flu-like symptoms seriously. Read more here

Independents back President's call for 1990 coup attempt memorial

Independent Senators Paul Richards and Dr Varma Deyalsingh welcomed President Paula-Mae Weekes' renewed call for an annual memorial to commemorate the July 27, 1990 attempted coup. On Tuesday, Richards said, "This country suffered immeasurable loss of lives, economic progress and international reputational damage as a result of the terrorist attack against our democracy by a group of terrorist who are yet to acknowledge their misdeeds and hurt inflicted on this country." He said the least that could be done is "officially and formally acknowledge and pay homage to those who lost their lives." Read more here

Imbert upbeat despite Standard & Poor's 'negative' outlook for Trinidad and Tobago

Finance Minister Colm Imbert says despite a negative Standard & Poor's (S&P) outlook for Trinidad and Tobago, its unchanged credit rating "validates" Government's management of the economy despite the financial challenges of the covid19 pandemic. In a statement on Tuesday evening, Imbert said S&P reaffirmed an investment grade of BBB-, a sign that the country is "a safe investment place." Read more here

500 Guyanese employed by Emerge BPO

Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh has lauded Adrian Collins and Carole Fletcher for their hard work and vision, which have enabled the employment of some 700 persons in the Business Process Outsourcing industry (BPO), including 500 in Guyana. Both are the proprietors of the Emerge Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) facility located at Camp and Robb Streets, Lacytown, Georgetown. Tokyo Olympics: Why 'superhuman' Simone Biles could change attitudes to mental health in sport

When Simone Biles - four-time Olympic gold medallist, multiple world champion and arguably the greatest gymnast of all time - withdrew from the team and all-around events at the Tokyo Olympics, it was headline news across the US and the world. The American, who is a sexual assault survivor, spoke about the importance of preserving her mental health and the need to "protect our minds and our bodies," adding: "We are people, at the end of the day." Biles' decision drew praise from many, but there were others who accused her of using mental health as an excuse for a below-standard performance. Read more here
