Man held for cutting relative’s throat

Police have arrested a man who slit the throat of a female relative during a domestic argument. The arrest was confirmed by ASP Ramdhanie Dipchand who told Newsday on April 28 that the man was held in the Longdenville area. He said, “Yes, yes. The man is in police custody. He was arrested last night and the police are conducting an investigation into that wounding.” Newsday asked about the victim’s condition. Dipchand said, “The victim received a three centimetre, superficial cut on her throat.” He said the wound was not life-threatening. Read more here

Police confirm irregularities on voting day

The T&T Police Service (TTPS) says while it maintained a strong operational presence during election day 2025 yesterday, several irregularities were reported and are currently under investigation. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence & Investigations, Suzette Martin, confirmed, “While the majority of the day’s activities proceeded peacefully, we did receive several reports, including bribery, intimidation, impersonation, and interference with the electoral process.” Arising out of these reports, one man was held with $30,000 in cash in St Joseph around 10 am. UNC sweeps to massive general election victory

AT 10.10 pm on April 28, the PNM government spectacularly fell to a crushing, crunching defeat to the United National Congress (UNC) with PNM political leader Dr Rowley saying if the voting trends held, the PNM would be going into the Opposition with 10 to 12 seats. UNC political leader and Prime Minister-elect Kamla Persad Bissessar first declared victory in the 2025 general election. Guyana tightening local content measures

The Guyana government yesterday said it was intensifying efforts to strengthen the local content framework in the country’s oil and gas sector, with new commitments aimed at increasing efficiency, tightening legal definitions and expanding opportunities for local businesses. During the recent Local Content Summit, Natural Resources Minister Vickram Bharrat announced a major step forward in the certification process, committing to a three-week timeline for the issuance of Local Content Certificates for applicants with complete and verifiable documentation. Attzs: Economy needs to reset

Development economist Dr Marlene Attzs is advising the new government to focus on three main issues to reset the economy and achieve economic growth. Firstly, she said, this must include restoring fiscal discipline. “The government has to manage its expenditures given the decline in revenue from our main source, the energy sector. So closing that fiscal gap is going to be of primary importance,” she explained to Guardian Media Ltd yesterday. Complementing that, Attzs said there must be an aggressive timeline and purposeful policy to diversify the economy beyond oil and gas. “And the two main political parties have articulated their plans in terms of the economic diversification, but I would want to suggest this is urgent,” she emphasised. Gov’t enforces new public-safety order following violent protests, looting

IN response to widespread violence, looting and destruction of properties across the country on Tuesday, the Government of Guyana has invoked the Public (Safety) Order 2025 to maintain law and order. Published in the Official Gazette on April 29, 2025, the order was issued by Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, under the authority of the Public Order Act (Cap. 16:03). It restricts all public meetings, gatherings, and processions in every administrative region of Guyana between the hours of 12:30 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. until further notice. Read more here

'Build, baby, build': Five things Carney has pledged to do as Canadian PM

Mark Carney will return to the Canadian parliament with a strengthened mandate, after his Liberal Party triumphed in a snap election that he called soon after becoming prime minister. Although one of his most pressing tasks is to deal with his US counterpart President Donald Trump - who has targeted Canada with trade tariffs and even vowed to make the country the 51st state of America - Carney has also promised action on a range of domestic issues.
