MIC-IT wins award for work in renewable energy
In celebration of excellence and innovation in the energy sector, the Energy Chamber of TT awarded the MIC Institute of Technology (MIC-IT) the Best Social Investment Project Award at the TT Energy Conference at the Hyatt Regency on February 11. The award, presented by British High Commissioner Jon Mark Dean, recognises the impact of MIC-IT’s Centre for Renewable Energy and Associated Technologies (CREATe). The centre, in Pointe-a-Pierre, was launched by MIC-IT in 2023 and aims to advance TT’s energy sector. Read more here
TTPS top brass unhappy with murder rate
Although a State of Emergency (SoE) remains in effect for T&T and the authorities have recorded a 20 per cent decline in homicides so far this year in comparison to last year, members of the T&T Police Service (TTPS) top brass are still concerned about the country’s murder rate. The latest incident at 12.48 pm yesterday, claimed the life of Belmont resident Marvin Phillip. Phillip, 33, of Vincent Brown Street, Gonzales, was reportedly shot by unknown gunmen near his home. Guardian Media was told Phillip, who initially lived in Diego Martin, relocated to Belmont last year following an attempt on his life. Read more here

Paray faces UNC screening committee
Mayaro MP Rushton Paray was unfazed by the possibility of not being chosen as the UNC's candidate for this year's general election. He made this comment before he went before the UNC's screening committee in Chaguanas on February 17. In a statement earlier in the day, Paray said he would be in Chaguanas at 6.30 pm and expected to be screened at 7 pm. He added as a UNC member he was exercising his right and would allow the process to take its course. Read more here

JMMB reports US$11.5M profit
The JMMB Group Limited has reported a net profit of J$1.83 billion ($78.5 million or US$11.5 million) for the nine-month period ended December 31, 2024. In the JMMB Group’s financial report which was post yesterday, the company said its financial performance continues to improve. Group CEO Keith Duncan said, “Even though for the first six months of the financial year, the Group reported an operating loss of J$570 million, there was marked rebound in the third quarter resulting in year-to-date operating profit of J$379 million. ‘Country’s revenue going right back to every Guyanese’
AS the government continues its efforts to transform the health sector and increase access to medical care, especially in hinterland communities, President, Dr. Irfaan Ali has blazed the opposition for attempting to run away from its sordid track record. During a live broadcast, the President discussed the upwards trajectory of the health sector, especially after inheriting one from APNU+AFC that had limited investments. In the last three years, 25 new health centers and posts were built, he said, adding: “These are the type of investments that we are making… investments not for 2025, but investments to 2028.” The government has launched a number of initiatives that prioritise the well-being of all. All passengers survive crash landing as plane flips at Toronto airport
All 80 people on board a plane which crashed and overturned while landing in Toronto have survived, officials said. The Delta Air Lines flight from Minneapolis skidded along the runway with flames visible and it came to a halt upside down as firefighters came to the rescue. Survivors said they were suspended upside down in their seats and had to release themselves, dropping on to the ceiling before clambering out on to the snow-covered tarmac. Read more here
