Ansa Packaging cops TTMA Green Manufacturer award

ANSA Packaging, a subsidiary of the Ansa McAl Group of Companies, was awarded the Green Manufacturer of the Year 2023 by the TT Manufacturers’ Association at its annual president's dinner and awards ceremony held at the Hyatt Regency, Port of Spain on November 19. In a release, Ansa Packaging welcomed the award, saying it is a significant achievement that underscores the company's commitment to sustainability and environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives over the last year. The award was received by Sarah Inglefield, Ansa McAl's marketing and external communications head. Read more here

Historian: School not unearthing students' talents

Historian Dr Rita Pemberton says the education system is not tailored toward ensuring that students understand themselves and their talents. She was the main speaker at a discussion, titled History & Heritage, at the Hochoy Charles Administrative Complex, Calder Hall, on December 3. The two-hour discussion was among the series of events to commemorate Tobago Day, officially celebrated on December 4. Saying the world is becoming increasingly competitive, Pemberton told an audience of mostly students that the education system needs to respond more strongly to global trends. Read more here

PNM's Laventille East/Morvant execs beg Leonce to stay on

The People’s National Movement’s Laventille East/Morvant constituency executive wants MP Adrian Leonce to reconsider his decision not to recontest the seat for general election. However, while acknowledging the love, Leonce last evening maintained his position not to contest in response to queries on whether he would heed his executive’s appeal. “I am heartened with all the support and encouragement I am getting. Many persons are praying for me and my family. I know they want me to sort out my personal issues as that takes priority,” Leonce said. Read more here

Charting a green future

This country stands at a critical crossroads, grappling with the twin imperatives of addressing climate change and sustaining economic growth. The 2024 Report on Economic Development (Red) by CAF (Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean) was launched on December 2, marking the 30th anniversary of TT’s partnership with the bank. Finance Minister Colm Imbert, delivering opening remarks at the Central Bank auditorium, Port of Spain, suggested this relationship was as critical as ever. Read more here

Fights, robberies at malls

Police want to ensure that criminals don’t take away consumers’ shopping cheer this Christmas. Following reports of violence and robberies at malls and shopping complexes over the past two weekends which involved young persons, DCP Junior Benjamin said yesterday there will be an increased police presence at these shopping areas, especially with school being out for the Christmas season. PM Phillips commends outgoing Chinese Ambassador for strengthening Guyana-China relations

Prime Minister Brigadier (ret’d) Mark Phillips, performing the duties of President, delivered heartfelt remarks at a farewell reception for Her Excellency Guo Haiyan, the outgoing Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China. The event, hosted Wednesday evening at the Pegasus Hotel, Kingston, celebrated the ambassador’s three-year tenure and her significant contributions to enhancing Guyana-China relations. In his address, PM Phillips expressed gratitude for Ambassador Guo’s role in deepening bilateral ties during a period marked by transformative milestones, including the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Guyana and China. This golden jubilee, he noted, symbolised Guyana’s unwavering support for the One China policy and set the foundation for stronger partnerships in the years ahead. Read more here

Macron to address nation after Barnier government collapse

French President Emmanuel Macron will address the nation on Thursday night, a day after Prime Minister Michel Barnier was ousted in a no-confidence vote. Names for a new prime minister were swirling before Barnier even tendered his resignation on Thursday morning, including Defence Minister Sébastien Lecornu, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau and centrist former presidential candidate François Bayrou. But finding a name that would not immediately be shot down by one of the large parliamentary factions could take some time, as it did in the summer, when former PM Gabriel Attal stayed on as caretaker for two months.
