Lawyer: Syria-repatriated children need full state support

Lawyer Criston Williams is calling for the government to provide support for Trinidadian nationals, particularly children, returning from Syria. He made the plea after two children, who were born there to Trinidadian parents, were ordered by a British court to be placed with their grandparents in Trinidad. They arrived in Trinidad and Tobago this weekend under the protection of a valid guardianship order issued by the High Court of England and Wales. The children, who were previously held in an orphanage in northeast Syria, were relocated to the United Kingdom in April 2022 through British government intervention. Read more here

Petit Valley labourer shot at while deejaying

A labourer, who works at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, narrowly escaped injury on Saturday night after an armed man opened fire on him as he was deejaying. Police said the 32-year-old man of Petit Valley, was reportedly setting up music equipment inside the Roots Grocery which is located at Roots Lane, Petit Valley, around 11.15 pm on April 26, when the masked assailant walked in and fired a single shot in his direction. EBC discusses election process with diplomats

The Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) held a meeting with members of the diplomatic corps on April 25 to discuss the electoral process in Trinidad and Tobago. A statement issued by the EBC on that day said the meeting took place at the commission's central electoral office in Port of Spain. The commission said key topics included its preparations for the April 28 general election with a particular focus on voter education initiatives, the recruitment and training of returning officers and polling day staff, and the selection of accessible polling venues. Heritage posts $2.3b pre-tax profit for 2024

Heritage Petroleum Co Ltd, the State-owned oil and gas company, posted a pre-tax profit of $2.3 billion for the year ended September 30, 2024, up $128.2 million from a year earlier, according to its audited results published in a newspaper yesterday. And according to the results after paying $1.36 billion in taxes for the year, Heritage posted a profit of $940.3 million, down from $1.48 billion in 2023. Read more here

Remove heavy vehicles from green spaces by Monday or face seizure — Public Works Minister warns

Truckers and heavy-duty equipment operators and owners have been issued a stern warning to remove their vehicles from roadways, particularly green spaces and recreational areas in Georgetown or face confiscation.
Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, sternly asserted on Saturday during an inspection of infrastructural projects across Georgetown. At Station and Owen Streets, Kitty, he highlighted the improvements made along the railway embankment, including the construction of a new play area for children. However, trucks and heavy-duty vehicles are encumbering the carriageway, creating a hazard and unsafe environment. Read more here

Girl, 5, among Vancouver dead as suspect charged

A man has been charged with eight counts of second degree murder after a car drove into a crowd at a street festival in Vancouver, Canada, killing at least 11 people - including a five-year-old girl. Kai-Ji Adam Lo, 30, appeared in court late on Sunday and was returned to custody, Vancouver Police Department said, adding that further charges are expected. Acting police chief Steve Rai described Saturday's attack at the Lapu Lapu Day festival - which was attended by up to 100,000 people - as the "darkest day in the city's history". Read more here
