Tropical storm warning lifted for Trinidad and Tobago

After a tension-filled day, the tropical storm warning for Trinidad and Tobago has been discontinued. In a statement shortly after 11 pm Tuesday, the Met Office revised its orange-level alert to yellow, an adverse weather status to monitor weather conditions. It said the system, potential tropical cyclone two (PTC2), had moved west of Trinidad and that tropical storm conditions were no longer expected. Read more here

Caribbean Airlines flight disruptions for Wednesday June 29

Caribbean Airlines is advising of further disruptions to its domestic and international flights due to the Tropical Storm Warning issued for Trinidad and Tobago and the severe weather conditions expected. Read more here

Prime Minister returns home on Thursday

The Prime Minister is due to return home on Thursday following his extended visit to the United States, first to attend the 8th Summit of the Americas, and then to undergo his annual physical. Confirmation of Dr Rowley's impending return was contained in a post on the Office of the Prime Minister's Facebook page at 9 pm on Tuesday. Read more here

Flour prices in T&T lowest in region

Trinidad and Tobago is in the bottom 10 per cent of 125 countries in terms of consumption of wheat, the raw material that is used to produce flour, according to the data portal IndexMundi. The data website estimates that T&T will rank 114th of 125 countries for wheat consumption in 2022, based on information sourced from the US Department of Agriculture. China is the largest consumer of wheat in the world, the EU second, India ranks third, the Russian Federation ranks fourth and the United States ranks fifth in the world. Read more here

‘Let the system work’

The Police Complaints Authority (PCA) will soon complete its report on the circumstances surrounding the death of 23-year-old Quindon Bacchus. This was according to President Dr Irfaan Ali during an engagement with relatives of Bacchus and other residents of Buxton on Tuesday. The President’s visit to the community followed a protest which started at Haslington, East Coast Demerara, where persons took to the street and chanted for justice after they were misled by a false media report that the police officer purportedly involved in the killing of Bacchus, had been released. INTERNATIONAL

Nato summit: Turkey pushes Finland and Sweden on extradition after deal

Turkey says it will now be pushing for the extradition of 33 "terror" suspects from Finland and Sweden, under a deal that lifted Ankara's objections to the two Nordic states' bids to join Nato. Turkey would ask them to "fulfil their promises", the justice minister said. Ankara has accused both Finland and Sweden of hosting Kurdish militants. The Nordic states agreed late on Tuesday to "address Turkey's pending deportation or extradition requests of terror suspects expeditiously". Finland and Sweden declared their intention to join the 30-member Western defensive alliance in May, in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Turkey initially threatened to veto their application but after four hours of talks at the Nato summit in Madrid the three countries reached a compromise. Nato leaders are expected to officially invite Finland and Sweden to become members before the end of the meeting. Read more here
