Beetham crash claims life of CAPE scholar: Young, bright boy dies

THE family and friends of 19-year-old Kavish Persad are mourning his untimely passing in a fatal car accident late on August 19, a day after receiving his highly anticipated CAPE results. He is remembered as a bright young man with a promising future. Reports are Persad, of Mahelal Street, Aranguez, was driving his white Hyundai Ioniq when he lost control of the car while trying to overtake another car. He crashed into the car before careening off the highway and slamming into the Beetham water main. His car then launched into the air before landing in the nearby Laventille River....read more

COPS HUNT 19 GANGSTERS * Resistance leader’s 2nd girlfriend among those targeted in latest SoE detention orders

Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander signed detention and preventative detention orders under the State of Emergency for 19 people between July 31 and August 15, including a second girlfriend of a gang leader currently in custody of the Defence Force at Chaguaramas. The orders were only gazetted on Tuesday night.  According to Detention Order 294, Eesha “Queen B” Joseph was identified by law enforcement as the second in command of the Resistance Gang and listed as the love interest of Robert “R-Man” Paul, who is detained at Staubles Bay. Earlier this month, a detention order was issued for Neisha “Hoggie” Ramkissoon, who was also listed as a love interest of Paul....read more

Court dismisses urgent hearing of appeal by CEPEP contractor

Court of Appeal judge Justice Nolan Bereaux has dismissed a CEPEP contractor’s application for an urgent hearing of his appeal. On August 7, Justice Margaret Mohammed stayed a lawsuit filed by contractor Eastman Enterprises against the CEPEP Company Ltd (CEPEP) and directed that all case documents be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for investigation. She ruled that the claim filed against CEPEP was “premature” and dismissed an application for an injunction to compel CEPEP to rehire contractors who had been terminated...read more

CPSO: T&T could take $2B hit from US tariffs

A regional private sector body has projected that Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) stands to lose an estimated US$291.9 million ($1.98 billion) in potential annual export revenue as a result of the imposition of the 15 per cent tariff on this country’s exports to the United States (US).

The Caricom Private Sector Organization (CPSO) is warning that the US decision to raise T&T’s reciprocal tariff rate from ten per cent to 15 per cent “could result in the most severe, absolute impact upon any of the Caricom member states. This impact could put the country in the unenviable position of suffering the most significant export revenue loss.”...read more

Be wary of PM’s attack on CAL, says Dr Vanus James

Grande residents 'not surprised' by Sturge threats

SANGRE GRANDE residents say they are "not surprised" that their MP, Wayne Sturge, has been receiving death threats less than four months into office. Republic acquires Cayman National shares

Republic Financial Holdings Ltd (RFHL), through its wholly owned subsidiary Republic Bank Trinidad and Tobago (Barbados) Ltd (RBTTBL), has announced the voluntary delisting of Cayman National Corporation Ltd from the Cayman Islands Stock Exchange (CSX), following the successful close of its share acquisition offer. The offer, which opened on May 30, 2025, targeted up to 10,596,483 ordinary shares. At closing, a total of 5,054,006 shares were validly tendered and acquired, increasing RFHL’s ownership, through RBTTBL, to 86.91% of Cayman National’s issued share capital, RFHL said in a release yesterday...read more

Russia launches biggest wave of strikes on Ukraine for weeks

Russia has launched 574 drones and 40 missiles on Ukraine in one of the heaviest bombardments in weeks, Ukrainian officials say. One person was killed in a drone and missile strike on the western city of Lviv, while 15 others were reported wounded in an attack on the south-western Transcarpathia region. The attacks came as US President Donald Trump spearheads diplomatic moves to halt the war.
