Blogger wants information on police ID numbers

A social activist and blogger has been permitted to pursue a claim against the Police Commissioner’s failure to provide him with information on how many police units are not required to display their regimental numbers on their uniform while on duty. Last week, Justice Jacqueline Wilson granted leave to Sebastian Sankersingh who sought the information in August 2023. He is seeking a declaration that Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher breached her statutory duty under the Freedom of Information Act to notify him of approval or refusal of his request, either as soon as practicable or not later than 30 days after the request was made as provided for by law. St Joseph man gunned down in suspected gang killing 

A 21-year-old man of St Joseph was shot and killed near his home on Sunday afternoon, in what police suspect was a gang-related attack. Police said Isaiah Dennis was walking on Centre Trace, La Seiva, St Joseph, around 4 pm, when he was approached by two men he knew. Residents later reported hearing gunshots,  They found Dennis bleeding from the head and buttocks. Two men also were seen running away from the scene. Read more here

Larry Lalla: UNC was made for government

Former prime minister and founder of the United National Congress Basdeo Panday featured prominently at the May 25 launch of the Rushton Paray-led United Patriots slate of candidates for the party’s internal elections in June. Using Panday’s clasped prayer hands as its symbol, team Patriots, launched its slate on what would have been the Panday’s 91st birthday at Signature Hall, Chaguanas. Attorney Larry Lalla, SC, who is contesting the post of chairman, said Panday founded the UNC to be a party in Government, not in Opposition where it has remained for the last nine years. Tourism can boost growth

While giving an overall pessimistic impression of the medium-term outlook for Trinidad and Tobago, several recommendations to improve the economic situation of the country were made by four economists and the head of a regional business chamber on Friday night. They were all speakers at The UWI National Conversations Virtual Seminar “Reflecting on the Medium-Term Economic Situation in T&T” where the panel included featured speaker Prof Roger Hosein, Dr Marlene Attzs, Dr Bhoe Tewarie and Vivek Charran, head of the San Juan Business Association. Major investments being made in Demerara River communities

President Dr Irfaan Ali has said that over the last four year, the government has made major investments in communities in the Demerara River area and noted that with large lands available, the production of various crops is possible. The Head of State made these remarks while visiting the Susannah’s Rust community along the Demerara River on Sunday, where he stated that although it is a small community, it has the production capacity given the thousands of acres of arable land which can be used for food production. Dozens reported killed in Israeli strike on Rafah

At least 45 people have been killed, including women and children, in an Israeli air strike on a camp for displaced Palestinians in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, the Hamas-run health ministry says. Videos from the scene in the Tal al-Sultan area on Sunday night showed a large explosion and intense fires burning. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had killed two senior Hamas officials and that it was reviewing reports that civilians were harmed. Hours earlier, Hamas had fired eight rockets from Rafah towards Tel Aviv - the first long-range attacks on the central Israeli city since January. The incidents came two days after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel to immediately halt its military offensive in Rafah, where hundreds of thousands of people are still believed to be sheltering.
