Father, teachers shaken by death of 'model student'
With tears in his eyes, Marlon Seentah, 40, has vowed he will have justice over the death of his 14-year-old daughter Mariah whose body was found in a bushy track near the Friendship Recreation Ground, Ste Madeleine, on September 20. According to a relative, a villager was walking through the track when they saw a dog barking at something in the bushes. Upon looking closer, the person saw the body of the Form Three student on the ground. One of her slippers was still on the track. Police were immediately notified. Seenath, a father of four, said whoever killed his wonderful daughter should have killed him instead. Read more here
CWU raises alarm over executive shake-up at TSTT
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has expressed concern that State-owned TSTT may be destabilised amid rumours of senior-level changes within the organisation. On Friday, a social media blog post went viral claiming that TSTT’s General Counsel and Corporate Secretary Gayle Allick Solomon, Assistant VP of Executive Sales Darryl Duke, and Brent Olton, Senior Manager of Security and Operational Risk, had been placed on administrative leave. The post also suggested that additional changes were expected across the company’s executive team. This development comes two months after Kent Western resigned as CEO, with Keino Cox appointed as acting CEO in July. When asked about the matter, Public Utilities Minister Barry Padarath said he was aware of the action taken against two employees and assured that the company’s operations “continue to function smoothly.” Read more here

Gonzales: Probe allegations against Alexander
Opposition Chief Whip Marvin Gonzales on September 20 called for an urgent investigation into allegations that Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander had met with imprisoned gang leaders, during his time on vacation leave as a senior superintendent of police and during his current tenure as a Cabinet minister. The allegations against Alexander are being levelled by an attorney for imprisoned acting Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Garth Guada. Gonzales sent a text to Newsday via WhatsApp. “There should be a swift and immediate investigation of these allegations by the Police Service and the Prisons Service, and the outcome of the investigation should be made available to the public. Tancoo pilots bills to strengthen BIR powers, crack down on financial crime
Finance Minister Dave Tancoo on Friday piloted two bills in Parliament aimed at bolstering T&T’s fight against financial crime and corruption: the Miscellaneous Provisions (FATF Compliance) Bill, 2025, and the Counter-Proliferation Financing Bill, 2025. The Miscellaneous Provisions Bill will, for the first time, grant the Board of Inland Revenue (BIR) investigative powers to probe tax-related offences. It will also criminalise a wider range of misconduct, including deprivation of state revenue, bribery in public procurement, bribery of foreign officials, and embezzlement of public resources. CAL blames crew, late planes for disruptions
Caribbean Airlines has blamed crew limits and late aircraft for a wave of cancellations and delays last week that upended travel plans for passengers across Trinidad and Tobago, St Lucia, and Guadeloupe. “Caribbean Airlines acknowledges that there were some delays on its domestic and regional services during the period of September 18–19. These delays were due to normal operational challenges, including crew duty limitations and the late arrival of inbound aircraft,” Caribbean Airlines told Express in an e-mailed response yesterday. PRIME Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips has reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to Amerindian development while honouring their role as Guyana’s First Peoples0 and custodians of the nation’s biodiversity. Prime Minister Phillips made these remarks while addressing the Heritage Day celebrations in Nappi Village, Region Nine, on Saturday. The Prime Minister outlined the government’s ambitious five-year development plan for Amerindian communities, announcing the revitalisation and continuation of the Amerindian land titling programme. UK says Israel must not retaliate against Palestinian statehood push
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper says she has warned Israel not to annex parts of the West Bank in retaliation for the UK's recognition of Palestinian statehood. Cooper was speaking to the BBC before attending a conference on Monday at the UN in New York where France and other European states are due to make a similar announcement. In what was a significant change in policy, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced the recognition of a Palestinian state by the UK on Sunday alongside Canada, Australia and Portugal. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the moves, saying they give "a huge reward to terrorism". Read more here
