CoP says criminals monitoring citizens’ garbage for financial info

Commissioner of Police (CoP) Allister Guevarro is advising citizens to pay careful attention to how they dispose of their garbage, as they may unsuspectingly be facilitating the easy transfer of personal and financial information to criminals. Responding to questions from Guardian Media yesterday about the motives behind recent kidnappings, he said, “It is not only the official garbage collectors who have an interest in what you throw out, so shred your financial statements before placing them in that garbage bag.” He also warned the public against the dangers of posting too much on social media. “There is also the exploitation of weak digital security protocols, allowing persons to extract personal information, so persons may see their Facebook, WhatsApp, and other accounts being hacked, and you don’t know what is the hidden intent behind that,” he said. Rowley: Interpol tip-off can be done secretly

Former Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley has suggested that just because TT officials could find no record of him having been red-flagged to Interpol, it did not mean that it did not occur, in a statement posted to his Facebook page on July 24. Rowley was commenting on two delays he recently experienced at the airport in Antigua and Barbuda on grounds of him reportedly being on an Interpol watch-list, but which the TT government and TT police service had each said they could find no record of his name being placed upon. Rowley cited a recent comment by former police inspector Wayne Hayde, known as calypsonian Watchman. Read more here

Defence Minister reveals shocking breach: 65-inch TV in jail cell

Prison officers are so fearful of the criminal element behind bars that at least one of them was afforded the luxury of a 65-inch TV in his cell, while guns and other contraband items are easily trafficked into the prison system. The shocking revelation came from Defence Minister Wayne Sturge during a budget consultation at Three Roads, Freeport, on Wednesday night. Sturge said the items were discovered inside Building 13 at the Maximum Security Prison in Arouca, where the high-risk prisoners are housed. “You would know that there are things that are allowed into prisons illegally. No one is surprised about marijuana and cocaine and other drugs and so on, and other types of contraband. But I don’t know if you are aware that recently, a couple guns were found in prison,” Sturge said. Read more here

France will recognise Palestinian state, Macron says

France will officially recognise a Palestinian state in September, President Emmanuel Macron has said, which will make it the first G7 nation to do so. In a post on X, Macron said the formal announcement would be made at a session of the UN General Assembly in New York. "The urgent need today is for the war in Gaza to end and for the civilian population to be rescued. Peace is possible. We need an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and massive humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza," he wrote. Palestinian officials welcomed Macron's decision, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the move "rewards terror" following Hamas's 7 October 2023 attack in Israel. Read more here
