Young talks energy security in Suriname
Minister of Energy Stuart Young yesterday met with Albert Ramdin, Suriname’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation in Paramaribo to discuss issues surrounding regional energy security. Young is currently in Suriname for its energy, oil and gas summit and exhibition, 2023 which ends on Wednesday. In a news release yesterday, Young said, “We discussed the potential of regional integration and in particular the role that we could play along with other Caricom member states in providing regional and extra regional energy security. “We are committed to working along with Guyana and other regional hydrocarbon-resourced countries to ensure sustainable energy security for the region.” Read more here
TTMA leads delegation to Suriname's energy summit
President of the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers Association (TTMA) Roger Roach will lead a delegation today to Suriname for the energy, oil, and gas summit in Paramaribo. This is in an effort to boost this country’s manufacturing and export sector. Roach will be joined by leaders of 20 companies from the chemicals, printing, and packaging; food and beverage; garment and construction sectors, the association said in a statement. The mission which is organised by the TTMA and exporTT, comes on the heels of a 2022 mission in Suriname which was attended by 17 companies from Trinidad and Tobago. Read more here

Firearms, ammunition seized over weekend
Police of the north central and north eastern divisions seized a total of three firearms, as well as ammunition, over the weekend. A press release said officers searched a park in Aranguez on Saturday where they found a pistol with a magazine containing four rounds of ammunition. Read more here
Parvati students help build disaster resilience in Penal/Debe
Shian Baboolal, 15, is no stranger to the flooding that often affects Penal/Debe. She and her family have often been marooned when flood waters surround their home at Mulchan Trace, Penal, and she can recall numerous times when they had to leave their vehicle behind and wade through murky water to get home. “One time we were actually stranded out the road and we had to wait until night time to come in and one time we were stranded in Goodman Trace and had to come home on a truck,” she said On another occasion, one of the family’s vehicles was destroyed by flood waters in San Fernando. Hinds: National security guided by same principles as church
National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds is assuring the public that discussions and decisions within his ministry, and by extension, the government, are guided by the same principles as the church. He was speaking at a national day of prayer event at Woodford Square, Port of Spain, which focused on praying for the country's protective services. He told worshippers he was there to join them in "giving praise to almighty God" and thanked them for their prayers. "This one is for us and we deeply appreciate that," he said. Read more here

New Amcham head seeks solutions to crime, customs reform
The American Chamber of Commerce (Amcham) welcomed its 17th president, Stuart Franco after its annual general meeting on Friday. Franco is the CEO of Trinidad Systems Ltd – an information and communication technology provider for companies regionally – and has been for the past 20 years. Franco, addressing members at the Hyatt Regency, Port of Spain, said there are three specific issues that need collaboration to yield significant successes: crime solutions, customs reform and digital strategy. CEG Goudron to start licence talks over Guayaguayare block
Challenger Energy has announced that its wholly owned subsidiary CEG Goudron Trinidad Ltd is set to begin negotiations with the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries over the grant of an exploration and production licence for the Guayaguayare block. The Guayaguayare block is located onshore in south-east Trinidad. Read more here

‘We are building a young corps of bright people’
Guyana’s economy is being transformed significantly with key investments in traditional and non-traditional areas, and to ensure that the country’s youth is well positioned to capitalise on the resultant opportunities, Vice-President, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has said that the government is rolling out a plethora of training opportunities to equip them with important skills. In an interview with 94.1 FM on Monday, Dr. Jagdeo said that the government is aiming, in particular, to recruit more young people into the oil and gas industry due to the sector’s rapid expansion. Global network of sadistic monkey torture exposed by BBC
A year-long BBC investigation has uncovered a sadistic global monkey torture ring stretching from Indonesia to the United States. The World Service found hundreds of customers in the US, UK and elsewhere paying Indonesians to torture and kill baby long-tailed macaques on film. The torture ring began life on YouTube, before moving to private groups on the encrypted messaging app Telegram. Police are now pursuing the buyers and several arrests have already been made.
