Sando mayor disappointed with business association
San Fernando Mayor Junia Regrello has expressed disappointment with the lack of cooperation between the southern business community and the San Fernando city corporation. Addressing the final statutory meeting for 2017, Regrello observed that several other business organisations such as the Port of Spain, Arima and Penal/ Debe chambers had all “banded together” to represent the business interests in their respective regions. NUGFW head: Bring on increase in retirement age
Unions continue to be divided about whether the retirement age should be moved from 60 to 65. However, President General, National Union of Government and Federated Workers (NUGFW) James Lambert said a retirement age of 60 years can no longer work in T&T and suggested that the age be moved to 65. St Lucia government denies wrongdoing in award of direct contracts
Saint Lucia’s infrastructure minister, Stephenson King, has denied that there was any wrongdoing or illegality in the award last month of 30 “direct purchase” (no-bid) contracts by economic development, housing, urban renewal, transport and civil aviation minister, Guy Joseph, totaling EC$12.6 million (US$4.675 million). Barbados Commits to Elimination of Child Labour by 2025
Barbados has become the ninth Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country to commit to a regional initiative to free Latin and America and the Caribbean of child labour by the year 2025. Minister of Labour, Social Security and Human Resource Development Dr Esther Byer-Suckoo symbolically handed over the signed agreement to the Regional Director of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, during the Organization of American States (OAS) XX Inter-American Conference of Ministers of Labour held last week. At least 6,700 Rohingya killed in first month of crackdown: MSF report
At least 6,700 Rohingya died as a result of violence in Rakhine state between 25 August and 24 September, according to a new report based on interviews with refugees. More than half a million Rohingya have fled northwestern Myanmar into neighboring Bangladesh since a concerted military crackdown began in August, following militant attacks on a border post.
