Coosal joins Angostura board
Businesswoman Tricia Coosal has been appointed as a director of Angostura Holdings and its subsidiaries, Angostura Ltd and Trinidad Distillers Ltd. Coosal’s appointment took effect on September 23 according to a notice on the TT Stock Exchange’s website. Coosal is the executive director of finance and administration at the Coosal’s Group of Companies and former president of the TT Manufacturers Association. She is known for growing Coosal’s Group of Companies into a major player in the local quarrying and construction industries, after taking over from her father and founder, Sieunarine Coosal. WASA: 20m gallon deficit at Caroni plant
At the height of the rainy season, the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) is experiencing a 20 million gallon-a-day deficit at its Caroni Water Treatment Plant, due to drier than normal conditions. Given the shortfall in water production and low levels at the nation's major dams and reservoirs, the Public Utilities minister has secured a commitment from Desalcott that it will not conduct a scheduled maintenance of its desalination plant in October. WASA's acting CEO Kelvin Romain made this announcement during a media conference at the Ministry of Public Utilities in St Clair on September 26. He thanked the minister for his efforts. Gasparillo man killed answering knock at door
Homicide investigators are probing the murder of Randall John, a 30-year-old security officer from Gasparillo, who was shot dead at his home early yesterday morning. John, a father of two of Warren Road, was employed as an MTS guard assigned to the Pleasantville Secondary School. Investigators said John and his common-law wife were in bed around 1.26 am, when they heard someone knocking at the front door. John got up to see who it was and moments later, several gunshots rang out. John’s common-law wife found him on the kitchen floor bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. Officers from the Gasparillo Police Station responded along with an ambulance, but John was already dead. When Guardian Media visited John’s apartment, none of his relatives were present. Farley: Give THA no less than 5.8% of budget pie
With the national budget mere days away, THA Chief Secretary Farley Augustine is calling on Minister of Finance Colm Imbert to allocate no less than the recommended 5.8 per cent to the Assembly to ensure Tobago has adequate funding for its critical development priorities. In tabling a motion at the 33rd sitting of the THA's 2021-2025 session, on September 26, at the Assembly Legislature in Scarborough, Augustine said the Assembly must insist that central government urgently address the historical under-funding of Tobago by increasing its budgetary allocation. He told the Assembly: “Between 2001 when the DRC (Dispute Resolution Committee) kicked in and 2004, the average is at 4.3 per cent.” Read more here
Laurel steps down as a Govt Senator—Kamla, political analysts say protection order against her ‘a personal matter’
Amid several questions about her political future, Laurel Lezama-Lee Sing has resigned from her position as a Government Senator. Lezama-Lee Sing, 43, stepped down on Wednesday after news emerged this week that her husband filed for an interim protection order against her on September 11. It was granted by the Family Court on September 19. Yesterday morning, the Office of the Prime Minister announced the resignation with a post on its Facebook page. “On Wednesday September 25th, 2024, consequent upon the resignation of Senator Laurel Lezama-Lee Sing, the President, Her Excellency Christine Kangaloo ORTT, on the advice of Prime Minister Dr The Honourable Keith Rowley, appointed Mr Ancil Dennis as a Government Senator.” Read more here

Young, Woodside execs talk Calypso
Energy Minister Stuart Young and permanent secretary Penelope Bradshaw-Niles have met with executives from Woodside Energy to discuss progress on the Calypso Project, according to a ministry release. The meeting was held at the ministry headoffice at the International Waterfront Complex, Port of Spain on September 25. The Calypso Project, one of Australian firm Woodside’s major initiatives, focuses on developing offshore natural gas resources in TT. Read more here
US Export-Import Bank assisting local SMEs
The Export–Import Bank of the United States (EXIM) is offering financing options to assist local businesses of all sizes in Trinidad and Tobago, political and economic counsellor at the United States Embassy in Port of Spain Scott Hansen has said. Hansen made the remark yesterday during a webinar hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce of Trinidad and Tobago (AMCHAM T&T). The event focused on enhancing trade and investment opportunities between T&T and the United States. Read more here

‘UN must fulfil its role as a custodian of global peace’
With wars raging and many vulnerabilities increasing, Guyana’s President, Dr. Irfaan Ali on Wednesday echoed calls for global reforms to address the disproportionate concentration of power that favours the voices of powerful nations while marginalising the concerns of the broader international community. The Guyana Head of State, during his address to the 79th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York, pointed out that developing countries are justly demanding more inclusive and representative decision-making processes in institutions and organs such as the UN Security Council. He said, too, that reforms at the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the World Trade Organisation (WTO) are needed to ensure fairer trade for developing countries. Read more here

Ukraine drone attack in Russia sparks fire
Thirteen people have been injured in Russia's Tver region after a large Ukrainian drone attack sparked a fire there, according to the Russian health ministry. Unverified footage has emerged purportedly showing a massive blast in the town of Toropets. Video footage circulating on social media showed detonations and smoke covering a large stretch of sky. A partial evacuation of the region was ordered after the strike in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The regional governor later encouraged residents to return, saying that all infrastructure in the town was working normally again. Read more here
