Whether it is a “fake” brand of alcohol or a box of medication meant to be sold in another market, illicit trade in goods is a prevalent issue in Trinidad and Tobago. The effects of the act are numerous, including a loss of revenue to the Government, the provision of sub-standard goods, and the erosion of legitimate businesses (the latter effect affecting the jobs of many persons). TTMA recognized the adversities associated with the illicit trade and hence formed the Illicit Trade Desk in 2019 in collaboration with many affected private sector entities. Via this avenue, the Association supports initiatives geared towards eradicating these activities in the domestic market.
