Balgobin: ‘Just and courageous budget’

A “just and courageous budget” was the response of Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers Association (TTMA) President, Dr Rolph Balgobin, after listening to Finance Minister Colm Imbert’s 2015/2016 budget presentation in Parliament this past Monday (October 5). Balgobin told Business Day he gave the budget a good review because it “makes the necessary adjustments to revenue and expenditure to bring the economy closer to a balanced budget.” On the fuel subsidy being decreased via a 15 percent increase each on the price of super gasoline and diesel ‘at the pump’, the TTMA head said the opportunity was right to do so following the drop in oil prices and the resultant drop in Government revenue from the energy sector. TTMA hoping for normalcy in forex supply

The availability of foreign exchange (forex); US dollars, is still an issue for members of the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers Association (TTMA) but TTMA President, Dr Rolph Balgobin, yesterday shied away from blaming Central Bank (CB) Governor, Jwala Rambarran. “I think that a number of our members have been very concerned about the way that the CB is perceived to be relating to the commercial banking sector, and the knockon effects that had on our businesses’ ability to get forex. (However) I don’t know that we would personalise it but I think that we would like to see a normalcy and for things to settle down.” Rambarran launched a new forex allocation system in April 2014, one which has been criticised by many in the business sector for making the problem worse. Read more…
