Petrotrin sued by former worker
State-owned Petrotrin has been sued by one of its former systems administrators for injuries he sustained when he slipped and fell on a wet floor at the company’s ICT building at Pointe-a-Pierre in 2016. Denzil Ramsahai, who worked in the human resources department, is claiming negligence on the part of Petrotrin, and is seeking compensation not only for his injuries but also for his wife’s loss of income since she had to leave her job to care for him. Cops arrest 11 illegal immigrants
Police believe they have made a dent in a thriving human trafficking ring after arresting 11 illegal immigrants during a raid early yesterday. It is believed a video circulating on social media, which showed people jumping off a pirogue and running onto shore at a beach in Erin, triggered a police operation around 2 am. The operation took place at the Los Iros beach and was headed by Senior Supt Adams and included Supt Basdeo, according to a statement from the T&T Police Service. A party of officers led by Sgt Corrie, of the Erin Police Station, conducted a search of a hotel where seven male and four female foreign nationals were found. Read more here

PM on Divali Nagar’s influence
Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley justified cutbacks in funding for Divali Nagar celebrations at the event’s closing ceremony in Chaguanas last night. However, the PM pointed out that the Divali Nagar is a beacon of hope and a beacon of the expression of the best in T&T. In delivering the feature address, Rowley said cuts were made in all areas of national spending, including operations at the Ministry of National Security. Read more here

CinemaOne IPO raises $14m
CinemaONE Gemstone 4DX CEO and director Ingrid Jahra is pleased the company has raised nearly half of some $30.8 million it is seeking from its first initial public offering (IPO). The company, the first to be listed on the Small and Medium Enterprise Market on the Trinidad and Tobago Stock Exchange, offered an initial 3,088,373 shares but sold 1,444,168 at $10 per share. CinemaONE’s IPO has therefore raised over $14 million but was undersubscribed by just over 50 per cent. The IPO is now closed after it was extended for an additional week. Read more here

Petrojam In Spotlight Again! - Gov't Asked If Company Is Owed US$3 Million By Firm That Filed For Bankruptcy In US
Jamaica's parliamentary Opposition has sought answers from the Andrew Holness administration about whether the state-owned oil refinery Petrojam is owed more than J$380 million by a Greek fuel-trading company that filed for bankruptcy protection in the United States (US) yesterday. Phillip Paulwell, the opposition spokesman on energy, said his information is that Aegean Marine Petroleum owes Petrojam US$3 million, or approximately J$381 million, and that the debt was unsecured. "The House leader (Karl Samuda, leader of government business in the House of Representatives) could verify if they are aware of this development and to confirm the outstanding amount owed to Petrojam," said Paulwell, who was speaking in Parliament late yesterday. House Democrats ascendant, set to check Trump's power
Democrats on Tuesday captured the House of Representatives and are set to exert a major institutional check on President Donald Trump, while breaking the Republican monopoly on power and ushering in a younger, more female and more racially diverse political generation. But the GOP solidified their Senate majority after an acerbic midterm election that enshrined America's deep divides and shaped a highly contentious battleground for the stirring 2020 presidential race. The opposite trends in the House and the Senate underscored a political and cultural gulf among diverse and affluent liberals living in big cities and their suburbs and the mostly, white, working class and rural conservative bloc of voters for whom Trump remains an iconic figure.
