Where mommy and daddy?

Artie Ramkhelewan, the three-year-old girl who survived having her throat slit by her own father on Sunday, yesterday kept asking nurses attending to her at the San Fernando General Hospital, for her mother and father. “She kept asking, ‘where my mommy and daddy?’ to the nurses who were monitoring her,” said a source at the hospital. The source added that Artie is still in a serious but stable condition and because of the severity of her injuries, she would remain at hospital for a few more days. Apart from having her throat slit, little Artie was stabbed in the chest and arms. She is being monitored closely around the clock by doctors and nurses. Read more…

Concern over spread of animal-borne diseases

In an attempt to improve this country's food security and ensure the Caribbean region can accurately recognise and respond to animal and food-borne diseases, officials of the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Marine Resources has convened a two-day symposium to educate local farmers and other officials about what needs to be done. Delivering brief remarks during the opening ceremony at the Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business, Mt Hope, the ministry's chief veterinary officer, David Kangaloo, expressed concerns about the increasing world population and each country's continued ability to provide food for their citizens. Sleeping Child Shot Dead

A two-year-old girl asleep with both her parents and her ten-day-old baby sister below a mosquito net was shot dead early yesterday morning at the family's Diego Martin home, when either a lone gunman or gunmen opened fire on the property.
The incident occurred around 1 a.m. at the small wooden home at Good Session Drive, Patna Village. Police said they were not aware of a motive behind the shooting, but neighbours said the father of the child (Keron Paul) had a falling out with some other people over a murder that occurred two years ago, and that may have been a factor. Govt reviewing Ryder Scott

Government has received the latest Ryder Scott Report on petrochemical reserves, but is in the process of reviewing it, Minister of Energy, Nicole Olivierre, said yesterday. During Senate Question Time the Minister also said the Natural Gas Master Plan Final Report 2014 to 2024 was received on September 4, 2015. However, review of both matters will be delayed by at least two weeks, due to the diary commitments of Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley this month. Rowley — who is due to attend a Commonwealth summit at Malta — heads the committee which is in charge of energy matters. Read more…

T&T’s ISIS fighters face Govt block

A discussion is currently taking place with the Attorney General on revisiting or changing the current situation of free, unrestricted/unhindered entry of T&T nationals who have joined the Islamic State (ISIS), National Security Minister Edmund Dillon confirmed yesterday. He alluded to the discussion, but said he couldn’t give details, in the Senate when UNC Senator Wayne Sturge asked if Government was revisiting or changing the free, unrestricted/unhindered entry of T&T “jihadists” now with Isis. Dillon later said the discussion with the AG was for T&T’s safety and security. Read more…

NGOs welcome PM Rowley’s wife in delegation to Malta

The Network of Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs) of Trinidad and Tobago is welcoming the participation of Sharon Rowley, wife of Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley, in the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Malta.
The PM has received both criticism and support for his decision to include his wife in the official delegation heading to the meeting which is being held from November 27-29. The ten-man delegation is estimated to cost taxpayers some $1.1 million with Mrs Rowley’s expenses being placed at just over $92,000. In a release issued yesterday, the Network of NGOs said it looked forward to Mrs Rowley’s participation in the Inaugural Commonwealth Women’s Forum at the CHOGM. Read more…

CWC CEO: Takeover will make C’bean stronger

Chief executive of Cable and Wireless Communications (CWC) Phil Bentley says the Caribbean will be stronger because of the planned acquisition of the company by Liberty Global. In a conference call with regional reporters just after agreement for the US$8.2 billion acquisition was announced on Monday, Bentley described the deal as a “win, win, win” which will bring more content, quality and continued investment to Latin America and the Caribbean. No indications of planned acts of terrorism on St Maarten following arrest of three Syrians

Following the arrest in St Maarten on Saturday of three men believed to be from Syria, who tried to enter the country using false travel documents, local authorities do not have any information indicating that the island is under any threat of acts of terrorism. Police arrested the three men when, due to the vigilance of immigration officers at the Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA), it was discovered that the travel documents they presented were false. The men are believed to be from Syria and were travelling from Haiti on forged Greek passports, with Europe as their final destination. Read more…

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller yesterday cracked the whip on factions within her People's National Party (PNP) that have been embroiled in a public quarrel over who should represent the party in North Trelawny in the upcoming general election. Yesterday, Simpson Miller, party president, sent a strong message to members in North Trelawny, urging them to put aside divisiveness and unite. 2 terrorist suspects killed, others held in raid in Saint-Denis, officials say

Two terrorist suspects are dead and seven detained after a raid in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis, a police source said. The security operation was linked to the deadly attacks that rocked the French capital five days ago, authorities said. The targets of the raid included the purported ringleader of last week's Paris attacks. Read more…

Google refuses to give up on Google+

Despite being the butt of social media jokes for a while now, Google+ isn't going anywhere - it has just been given a revamp.The "new" site will now focus on "collections" and "communities" - making it more an interest-network than a personal one. In a blog post, Google said: "Today, we're starting to introduce a fully redesigned Google+ that puts Communities and Collections front and centre.
