Slain following movie outing 

While their neighbours celebrated two weddings in their community, a Felicity couple suffered a tragic end after being gunned down upon returning home from the movies on Sunday night. The bloodied corpses of Narine Kalpoo, 59, and his common-law wife, Lutchmin Jaggernath, 51, fell metres apart from each other after they were ambushed by a gunman who lay in waiting for them, the discovery of which quickly turned the village celebrations into mourning as neighbours gathered at the couple’s Kalpoo Avenue home to find out how they died. Bleak Christmas for axed media workers

Kendelle Crepin, a sub-editor for the past nine years who was among 33 workers axed by One Caribbean Media (OCM), says he might be forced to sell his car to survive financially. Crepin, 34, of Chaguanas, said while he has no children to look after he has loans and expressed concern that he would not be able to honour the payments. Read more here

Dillon tells top cop: Get murder rate down

National Security Minister Edmund Dillon has called on Acting Commissioner of Police Stephen Williams to re-strategise crime fighting techniques in order to get the alarming murder rate - which stood at 396 up to press time - down. This as Dillon was yesterday informed that Northern Division accounts for 98.1 percent of the nation’s murders, followed by the Central Division which accounted for 36.1 percent. Dillon held a two-hour meeting with Williams and the commanders of the two divisions, Snr Supt McDonald Jacob (Northern) and acting Snr Supt Kenny McIntyre (Central) to give them a clear mandate to re-strategise and bring down the murder toll. Charles: Francis should resign

Minister in the Ministry of Education Dr Lovell Francis should resign because of his inability to deal with problems at the Cowen Hamilton Secondary School in Moruga. This is according to Member of Parliament for Naparima Rodney Charles. Francis is also the MP for Moruga. The Naparima MP said the people affected by the lack of work done at the school will show their disenchantment with the Government by not supporting the People's National Movement (PNM) in the upcoming local government elections. Caribbean Cement Posts Loss With Overhaul Of Mill

Caribbean Cement Company Limited's (CCC) overhaul of its kiln and cement mill contributed to the company posting a net loss during the September quarter. The Kingston-based cement producer made a net loss of $81 million on revenues of $3.67 billion. That equates to quarterly earnings of negative 10 cents per share, down from a positive 72 cents a year earlier. It is the first big loss in a number of quarters for CCC, which gained the favour of investors over the last 12 months based on its improved financial performance. Read more here

Brexit won't change relationship between UK and territories

The UK government has said that the referendum result that saw the British people vote to leave the European Union earlier this year does not change the position on sovereignty between it and the overseas territories.  The Brexit issue was a key element during last week’s annual Joint Ministerial Council in London, when the leaders of the British Overseas Territories met with UK officials. The parliamentary under-secretary at the department for exiting the European Union (EU) also attended the JMC and in the communiqué emerging from the meeting the UK said it would involve the territories in the exit talks. New floods in Haiti: ten victims, four departments affected

Flooding was reported in at least 15 communities in the departments of Grand'Anse, North, Northeast and Northwest in Haiti, following heavy rains on Saturday and Sunday. The city centre of Cap-Haitien and its communities were particularly affected, either by the flood of torrents of water aggravated by the gullies of the hills or by the rise and discharge of river waters of Haut-du-Cap, HaitiLibre reported. The provisional toll is ten dead in four departments affected (three women, four men and three children from the same family, including a young girl), three injured, including two children, and one disappeared (adult male). Mosul battle: Experts probe IS mass grave at Hamam al-Alil

Iraqi forensic experts are investigating a mass grave that was discovered by troops advancing towards the Islamic State-held city of Mosul. The Iraqi military has said the grave, in the grounds of an agricultural college in the town of Hamam al-Alil, contains about 100 decapitated bodies. Most have been reduced to skeletons, so it is unclear who the victims were. Read more here
