The owner of a popular weight loss clinic in T&T was detained by police yesterday in connection with a fraud investigation.The T&T Guardian was told that the 40-year-old doctor was at her St James clinic when she was visited by the officers. Read more… 

Junior officer in court today

A 26-year-old prison officer attached to the Port of Spain Remand yard has been charged with misbehaviour in public office and is expected to appear before a Port of Spain magistrate today.
This charge stems from investigations following the discovery that keys to the west wing of the Remand Prison had gone missing on June 2. Read more…

ARIMIANS by the hundreds turned out yesterday for the funeral service and Parang send-off for its favourite son, cultural icon Holly Betaudier. Despite inclement weather, there was standing room only inside the Santa Rosa RC Church for a man who gave this country the better part of his long life, in promoting local culture and in particular Parang, via his radio shows and the ‘Scouting for Talent’.  Read more…

Sagicor seeks home move to Bermuda

THE Sagicor Financial Corporation will ask its shareholders at their annual general meeting (AGM) in Barbados tomorrow to approve the company’s move of its headquarters from Barbados to Bermuda. The company has been searching for a new home base since its current base, Barbados, was downgraded by the rating agency Standard and Poor’s. It considered relocating to the United Kingdom, here to TT or to Bermuda, eventually choosing Bermuda as its new home. Read more…

KCT Takeover Pushed Back Again - Only Loan Paperwork Remains For Financial Closure Of Port Deal


The Port Authority of Jamaica has again extended financial closure of the US$510 million ($64 billion) concession agreement with French outfit Kingston Freeport Terminal Limited for the operation of the Kingston Container Terminal (KCT). The transaction is now six months behind its original schedule. Kingston Freeport, the vehicle used by French company CMA CGM and Terminal Link to operate the 30-year port concession, was initially to have tied down financing by last December. That date was later pushed back to March of this year. Read more…

Opposition wins St Lucia election

CASTRIES, St Lucia -- The opposition United Workers Party (UWP) has won the general election in Saint Lucia, beating the ruling St Lucia Labour Party (SLP) 11 seats to six, effectively reversing the result of the last election in 2011. According to the Electoral Office, 160,465 voters were eligible to cast ballots at the 430 polling stations across the island, choosing from among 39 candidates vying for the 17 seats in the country’s parliament.The SLP of outgoing prime minister Dr Kenny Anthony and the UWP of businessman and former tourism minister Allen Chastanet both fielded full slates of 17 candidates. Read more here…

US election: Clinton set to tighten nomination grip

Six states vote on Tuesday, with California (543 delegates) and New Jersey (142) the big prizes. Associated Press said Mrs Clinton had already reached the 2,383 delegates needed, taking into account pledges of support from so-called superdelegates. Rival Bernie Sanders insists it is too early to call the result. Based on preliminary published figures, voter turnout was a modest 52.85 percent. In his concession message, Anthony said he does not intend to serve as the leader of the opposition or as political leader of the SLP. Read more...

 

Royal Dutch Shell cost-cutting drive to continue

Royal Dutch Shell plans more asset sales and cost-cutting over the next few years as the energy giant adjusts to prolonged low oil and gas prices.Announcing a new mid-term strategy to transform the company, Shell said it expected to save another $1bn (£690m) from its £35bn takeover of BG Group.Critics said Shell overpaid for BG, but chief executive Ben van Beurden told the BBC he would do the same again.
