Fight Over Man's Body

Relatives claiming bodies of loved ones killed on the weekend clashed yesterday at the Forensics Sciences Centre, (FSC) Federation Park, over differences. One of the confrontations came to blows. The incidents involved relatives of Kerron Warrican, 31, of Mc Bean Village, Couva, who died after reportedly being knocked down along with two police officers by an angry patron at a bar in central Trinidad on Saturday last. The family of Amalgamated security guard Anthony Joseph, a father of five, who was killed on Sunday night by gunmen as he and another guard responded to an alarm triggered at the Berger Paints warehouse compound, in Sea Lots were also said to be involved in pulling and tugging. Chief Medical Officer: Low chances of H1N1 deaths

Of the 29 lab-confirmed H1N1 patients in T&T, 25 have been treated by doctors and discharged. In a telephone interview yesterday, Chief Medical Officer Clive Tilluckdharry said the chances of a normal healthy person getting the H1N1 virus was low and got even lower for fatalities. “We have about 4,000 cases of the flu every year. For this year, so far, 29 cases have been lab-confirmed as H1N1.” Tilluckdharry said those people were treated by their doctors and were back to good health. Read more...

A baby girl was born in the back seat of a Community Comfort Patrol (CCP) vehicle yesterday as officers were rushing her mother to the Mt Hope Women's hospital after she collapsed along the Eastern Main Road in El Dorado with labour pains. ‘Double standards’ by PM Rowley

United National Congress (UNC) Princes Town MP Barry Padarath yesterday accused Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley of “double standards” with respect to Rowley attending the wedding of a friend’s daughter in Barbados over the weekend. Rowley left the country last Friday and returned on Sunday. Finance Minister Colm Imbert acted as Prime Minister during that period. Read more...

Deyalsingh: Vaccine free, don’t pay $400

Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh says he is unaware that some private doctors were charging $400 for the H1N1 "swine flu" vaccine, but noted it was available at health centres for free. The Express understands some private doctors have increased the price of the vaccine to $400. The vaccine normally sells for $200. Read more...

December  is always brighter downtown Port-of-Spain, thanks to the Salvation Army and to Digicel volunteers who, week after week, bring warm soup and Christmas cheer to the socially displaced at Columbus Circle and the Centre for Socially Displaced Persons. Joining the team this week were also Digicel Foundation’s Chairman, Garvin Medera and Digicel Foundation’s Board Member, Desha Clifford, who helped pack the tasty soup prepared by Ms. Althea Trimmingham. CariCRIS reaffirms Barbados rating

Port-of-Spain-based, regional credit rating agency, CariCRIS, yesterday reaffirmed the ratings of CariBBB+ (Foreign Currency Rating) and CariA- (Local Currency Rating) on its regional rating scale and bbAAA on its Barbados National Scale of the debt issue (notional) of the size of US$300 million of the Government of Barbados. In a statement, CariCRIS said the ratings indicate that the level of creditworthiness of this obligation, adjudged in relation to other obligations in the Caribbean is adequate. Number of refugees reaching Europe this year passes 1 million

The number of refugees who have entered Europe by sea and land this year has passed 1 million, the International Organization for Migration said Tuesday. The latest updates for so-called "irregular arrivals" into Europe in 2015 as of Monday put the total number at 1,005,504, according to the organization. Read more...

Iraqi forces 'advance into Islamic State-held Ramadi'

Iraqi government forces have advanced into the centre of the city of Ramadi, which is controlled by jihadist group Islamic State (IS), officials say. A spokesman for the Counter-Terrorism Service, Sabah al-Numani, said troops and militiamen, supported by the air force, were clearing residential areas. Read more...
