Record-breaking Cedenio climbing fast

Machel Cedenio made a strong statement on Sunday night at the Joao Havelange Olympic Stadium, here in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The 20-year-old finished fourth in the Olympic Games men's 400 metres final, but more importantly, announced himself as a major player in what is arguably the greatest era in the one-lap event. Under siege

Chinese businesses and residents are under attack by bandits in Santa Rosa Heights, Arima. The latest Chinese victim is a 74-year-old man who was beaten on July 28 and left for dead at his Pinto Road business place, which is located two buildings from the Pinto Road Police Post. Another Chinese businessman, who is situated a mere 500 feet away at Avocado Road, was also relieved of the day’s sales as he closed up his business two weeks ago. Read more here

Anti-Gang Act expires Expect no bail rush, says Sturge

Opposition Senator, attorney Wayne Sturge, said yesterday the expiration of the Anti-Gang and Bail (Amendment) Act, as of midnight on Sunday, does not mean the floodgates would be open for offenders to be automatically released on bail. Sturge has slammed the Government for being irresponsible in not presenting statistics to show that both acts worked and said this was one of the reasons the Opposition never supported the extension of the amendments. On Sunday, Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi said law enforcement authorities were bracing for a flood of applications for bail when the acts expired. Read more here

Detained nine still in Turkey

The nine T&T nationals detained in Turkey have not yet left there to return home and they are still being processed by Turkish authorities, National Security Minister Edmund Dillon confirmed yesterday. The Turkey Daily Sabah recently reported the nine were held in Turkey on July 27 along with a Syrian man who was taking them, via truck, to Syria for recruitment by Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) as foreign terrorist fighters. It was stated that the nine will be deported back to T&T. They are at Turkey’s Adana detention centre. Agreement to be finalised for 33.1 megawatt solar facility in Jamaica

Minister of science, energy and technology, Dr Andrew Wheatley, says the government of Jamaica is to finalise an agreement with Eight Rivers Energy Company to build and operate a 33.1 megawatt solar facility at Paradise Park, in Westmoreland. The plant will contribute to the grid at US8.54 cents per kWh, and represents an investment of US$50 million. Construction, Wheatley noted, is slated to start in 2016/2017 with supply to the grid commencing in 2018. Read more here

Businesses owned by former minister of finance raided in Curacao

Justice department officials in Curacao on Monday morning raided two companies owned by former minister of justice George Jamaloodin, including a security company, Speedy Security, in Saliña. A house elsewhere in the city was also searched, where a woman with the initials CCM was arrested. She is thought to be the minister’s former life partner. Read more…

Guantanamo Bay: US in largest detainee transfer under Obama

The US says it has sent 15 Guantanamo Bay detainees to the United Arab Emirates - the largest single transfer during President Barack Obama's administration. The Pentagon says the transfer of 12 Yemeni nationals and three Afghans brings the total number of prisoners down to 61 at the US facility in Cuba. Read more…

Our transition to becoming cyborgs has officially begun.MIT researchers have created tattoos that function as interfaces for smartphones and other digital devices. These tattoos can receive and send information, serving as wearable devices that add a personal touch of style.The tattoos rely on gold leaf to sense a person's touch, heat a display and communicate with other devices. The tattoos can connect wirelessly with smartphones through NFC, a type of technology used for mobile payments at retailers and elsewhere.
