Woman, 61, first confirmed Zika case

Fears that the rapidly spreading Zika virus would hit the shores of T&T materialised yesterday when Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh announced T&T’s first confirmed case. Careful not to identify the victim or location, Deyalsingh said it was a 61-year-old woman who recently returned from a visit to New Zealand. Read more…

Problems force schools’ closure

PARENTS of students attending two schools yesterday complained that their children are being denied an education as the schools remain closed for varying reasons .Success Laventille Secondary remained closed for a second consecutive day because of staffers’ absence in protest over the Ministry of Education’s continued failure to build a wall to protect pupils from the intrusion of gangsters, some of whom pelt bottles into the school and openly cavort, eating lunch atop the low school walls . Read more…

JMMB group revenue grows

THE JMMB Group posted an increase of 9.2 percent in operating revenue, for the nine-month period ending December 31, moving from J$7.8 billion in the corresponding prior period, to J$8.5 billion. The Group, however, reported a net profit of J$1.73 billion, a decline of 7.1 percent over the comparative period. Read more…

Death by pollution: Delhi's fight for clean air

The night before the biggest exam of his life, Sarthak Jain couldn't breathe. His limbs were listless, his breathing labored.Jain's parents, both trained doctors, recognized the signs of a severe asthma attack. They put the 18-year-old in the family car and raced to a nearby hospital. Doctors determined that Jain was suffering from low levels of oxygen in his blood. His life was in danger. Jain was given injections and put on a nebulizer. His relatives, told to prepare for the worst, huddled together in the intensive care unit and cried. Read more…

Ankara blast: Turkey PM says Syria Kurds to blame
