Senior cop nabbed in sting operation

A police inspector in charge of crime, with more than 20 years’ service, remained locked up in a cell at the Belmont Police Station yesterday during a sting operation, in which he and a police constable were nabbed, which was carried out by officers of the Professional Standards Bureau (PSB) of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS). The constable, who is assigned to the Port-of-Spain Division, remained detained in a cell at the Woodbrook Police Station and was expected to be interviewed yesterday by officers of the PSB. Read more…

Consent, children and related offences

With the proclamation of the Children’s Act No 12 of 2012 (“the Act”) on 18th May 2015, several changes followed. A “child” is now defined as “a person under the age of 18 years.” Before the proclamation of the Act, a child was defined as a person under the age of 16 years and the Sexual Offences Act Chap 11:28 listed various offences for engaging in activities with persons under 16 years of age. However, under the new legislation, certain sections of the Sexual Offences Act have been repealed, widening the parameters under which persons can be charged. PM pays tribute to former teacher

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley yesterday paid tribute to his former teacher Eugene Blackette, 97, retired principal of Bishop’s High School Tobago who has died. “A teacher affects eternity; he never knows where his influence stops,” Rowley said, quoting American historian Henry Adams, in a press release issued by the Office of the Prime Minister. “Over the years, Mr Blackette distinguished himself as a dedicated educator and mentor to generations of Tobagonians, who were fortunate enough to come under his influence,” the Prime Minister said. Read more…

THA investing in business development

The Tobago House of Assembly (THA) has spent close half-a-billion dollars over the past 13 years to stimulate and nurture business development on the island, says Chief Secretary Orville London. He said enterprise fostering initiatives such as the Business Development Loan Programme established in 2003, the Department of Advance Training and Advisory Services (DATAS) and its venture capital company, ensure that Tobagonians were not bereft of opportunities to create wealth and stimulate the economy. Read more…

Second suicide in two months at Guyana’s Kaieteur Falls

Another young woman plunged to her death from Kaieteur Falls on Saturday, marking the second apparent suicide at that location in two months. Dead is Roshinee Pagwah of Reliance Abandon, East Canje, Berbice, Region Six. The 21-year-old jumped into the 741-foot Falls at about 11 a.m, according to eyewitnesses. Roraima Airways’ Marketing and Public Relations Assistant Tremayne Junor, who was present at the scene, told the Guyana Chronicle that the young woman appeared to be very reserved during the trip to the world’s largest single-drop waterfall. Grenada newspaper editor voices concern over gag orders

George Worme, editor of The New Today newspaper in Grenada has expressed concern over what he described the recent spate of gag orders in relation to proceedings in the high court. In a statement, the newspaper noted with grave concern the recent introduction of gag orders by the high court to prevent the media from bringing to the attention of the public some very high profile cases.Three gag orders have been approved by judges of the high court on applications made in those cases in order to prevent media houses from carrying reports on the proceedings. Brussels lockdown: Belgian police arrest 16 in anti-terror raids

Belgian police have made 16 arrests in anti-terror raids, but suspected Paris attacks gunman Salah Abdeslam remains at large, the authorities have said. Some 22 raids were carried out Sunday across Brussels and Charleroi, the federal prosecutor's spokesman said. Brussels remains on the highest level of terror alert. Universities, schools and the metro system will stay closed on Monday. Read more…
