Gunmen More Brazen

Gun-toting criminals have become bolder, according to the head of the Port-of-Spain Criminal Investigation Division, Senior Superintendent Donald Jacobs. Jacobs will be replacing Senior Superintendent Johnny Abraham as head of the Port-of-Spain Division, however the Superintendent told Newsday yesterday, that gunmen are no longer depending on the cover of darkness to attack and murder, instead, he said, shootings “are becoming more frequent during the day.” “The patterns of shootings have changed,” said Jacobs. “Before shootings were done during the night, usually between the hours of 6 pm, and 2 am. Now criminals are attacking during the day. They have definitely become more brazen.” Jacobs also told Newsday yesterday that the murders of Matthew “Smeagle” Simmons and Sedal Samuel, were examples of the change in the trend in murders. Read more…

Robbers set fire to Siparia warehouse

When burglars at a warehouse in Siparia failed to steal hundreds of thousands dollars in goods early Sunday, they then set the building on fire, causing more than $2M in damage. According to reports, firefighters from the Siparia Fire Station responded to reports of a fire at the warehouse of Harry’s Global Imports on Quinam Road, Siparia around 6.10 am yesterday. Prakash warns: Property tax can be a ‘debt burden’

He succesfully lobbied to “Axe the Tax” now Congress of the People political leader Prakash Ramadar is warning that the proposed Property Tax of the current People’s National Movement administration can transform an inheritance to a “debt burden.” Ramadhar was speaking at the COP’s first post-national council press conference for 2016 at the party’s Operations Centre in Charlieville. According to the COP leader the honeymoon period for the Keith Rowley administration was over and warned that the coming year could be a challenging one for citizens. Read more…

Maharaj urges Government to pay up

Ahead of Privy Council hearing on Clico Policyholders Group...

Former Attorney General and Clico legal adviser Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj yesterday appealed to the Government to pay the money owed to the United Policyholders Group. Maharaj’s appeal comes ahead of the January 18, 19 and 20 Privy Council hearing on the matter in London. Almost exactly one year ago, Maharaj had filed an appeal before the Privy Council challenging a Court of Appeal ruling, which had reversed that of High Court judge Justice Joan Charles, who had ordered the (PP) Government to honour its promise to the policy holders, and pay them the full amounts due on their policies of insurance with accrued interest. Approval sought for oil sands project

President of the Quarry Association of T&T Ramdeo “Dan” Persad is predicting said the country will get a new crude oil production centre if a large scale mining and processing project gets off the ground in Trinidad’s south-western peninsula. The proposed project involves the abundant tar and oil sands in fields located at Forest Reserve, Parrylands, Guapo and Antilles-Vessigny and Persad said it could produce 50,000 to 100,00 barrels of synthetic crude oil per day. Cops Harassed - Commish Warns Sleazy Senior Officers About Sexual Advances

Some senior officers in the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) have been sexually harassing their subordinates, leading the Commissioner of Police to issue a warning in the Force Orders that criminal charges and dismissal could result if they are found guilty of the offence. Numerous complaints have been received from some of our members of sexual harassment by senior officers. These reports indicate that sexual harassment occurs in the Jamaica Constabulary Force in the form of unwanted physical contact such as actual touching, fondling, pinching, cornering or trapping by leaning over a worker," Dr Carl Williams, wrote in the Force Orders published last Thursday. Cologne attackers were of migrant origin - minister

The German official responsible for investigating the attacks on women in Cologne on New Year's Eve says the suspects were "almost exclusively" those with a migration background, mainly North African and Arab. Ralf Jaeger accused Cologne police of making "serious mistakes". Read more…

David Bowie dies of cancer aged 69

Singer David Bowie has died at the age of 69 from cancer. His son, film director Duncan Jones, confirmed the news and a statement was issued on his social media accounts. "David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer," it said, asking for privacy for his family. Read more…
