3 held in Tobago double murders

Homicide detectives have held three people, among them a woman, in connection with the killing of British lawyer Richard Wheeler and his Trinidadian wife Grace. The suspects are in their 20s. The announcement was made by Assistant Commissioner of Police Homicide Vincel Edwards who was selected by acting Commissioner of Police Stephen Williams to head a special investigative team to probe the double tragedy. He was speaking at a special police news conference at the Scarborough Police Station yesterday. Read more...

Axed T&T ‘Miss World’ sues 

Kimberly Singh who was replaced last week as the country's representative to the Miss World competition has filed legal action, seeking an injunction against the organisation that sacked her. In documents filed before the San Fernando High Court by attorney Asaf Hosein yesterday, Singh has requested that the organiser, Vanessa Sahatoo-Manoo, president of Oneness Entertainment Trinidad and Tobago Ltd, allow her to continue to be prepared as the country's representative in the 65th Miss World competition to be held in China on December 19, pending the hearing and determination of the matter before the court. Rowley: No witch-hunting

There will be no witch-hunting by the Cabinet of T&T but Government will not be turning a blind eye and allowing wrongdoing to become fashionable in the country. That was the promise of Prime Minister Dr Keith rowley as he addressed the post-Cabinet press conference yesterday. PM Rowley to look at his Cabinet again 

The "horrendous" video of a female toddler being abused by an adult male has "crystallised" in Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley's mind the need to consider a restructuring of his Cabinet to ensure that a focus on "gender and children" is not lost. Horrific act

The Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Commerce yesterday described the murders of British national Richard Wheeler and his wife, Trinidad-born Grace Wheeler as a "horrific act". "The T&T Chamber unequivocally denounces this latest horrific act and remains hopeful that the person or persons responsible for the atrocity will be brought to justice sooner rather than later. The board of directors and management extend sincerest sympathies to the family, relatives and co-workers of Mr Richard Wheeler and his wife, Grace," the country's biggest business group said in a statement. Foreign minister makes strong case for Bahamas to sit on UN Human Rights Council

Minister of foreign affairs and immigration, Fred Mitchell, on Thursday made a strong case for The Bahamas to become the first English-speaking Caribbean nation and small island developing state from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to sit on the United Nations Human Rights Council. Noting that there is a Latin American and Caribbean group on the UN Human Rights Council, Mitchell said, however, that “no one from the Caribbean group has ever sat on the Council.” “We think it is time,” Mitchell said. No Laboratory-Confirmed Case Of Zika Virus In Jamaica, Health Ministry Insists

The Chief Medical Officer in the Health Ministry, Dr Marion Bullock DuCasse, is insisting that there is no laboratory-confirmed case of the Zika Virus in Jamaica.Her assertion follows claims made today by medical doctor, Dr Sandra Williams-Phillips, who said she had contracted the virus and 12 of patients too. But Bullock DuCasse stresses that anecdotal evidence is not sufficient to arrive at a conclusion that someone is infected with the virus. She notes that Zika Virus has similar symptoms as other viral diseases such as dengue fever and the Chikungunya virus. Read more...

Sweden school killings: Attacker 'had racist motives'

A masked man who killed a teacher and a pupil at a school in Sweden had "racist motives", police believe. Police chief Niclas Hallgren said they had based their conclusion on what was found at the killer's apartment and "his behaviour during the act". Media reports suggest the 21-year-old attacker had far-right sympathies. Armed with a sword and wearing a helmet and mask, he stormed a school in Trollhattan, near Gothenburg, before being shot dead by police. Read more...

British telecom TalkTalk targeted in major hack

The personal data of four million customers may have been stolen in a "significant and sustained cyberattack" targeting one of Britain's leading phone providers. U.K. telecom TalkTalk has admitted that its website was hacked earlier this week, and that information including the date of birth, address, credit card and bank details of its four million customers is at risk.
