Confidence patrols launched by ACP Mystar – South cops focus on domestic violence

With 15 of the 29 domestic violence-related murders recorded this year occurring in Southern Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police Wayne Mystar says officers will be undertaking a number of measures to educate and combat this form of criminality as part of initiatives aimed at improving public safety during Christmas season. Mystar made this known while speaking with reporters as he launched the confidence patrols initiative for the South Central area at South Park, San Fernando on Thursday November 21. Read more here

Chloe raises almost half the money needed for life-saving surgery

Chloe Ramnarine, a University of the West Indies student, has received 49 per cent of the funds needed for a life-saving bone marrow surgery in Colombia. After her story was broadcast and published by Guardian Media in the Guardians of the People segment, donations poured in from people all around the world. By 5 pm yesterday, her GoFundMe page had raised over US$59,000. The surgery, estimated to cost US$120,000, along with travel and accommodation, will total over US$140,000. Read more here

Princes Town MP calls on Public Utilities Minister to resign

Princes Town MP Barry Padarath is calling for Minister of Public Utilities Marvin Gonzales to resign after a judgment delivered by High Court judge Nadia Kangaloo in the matter of Lezama vs Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA). Padarath described the ruling as "deeply troubling." Lezama, a senior manager at WASA, filed a lawsuit seeking access to documents related to his investigation of alleged misconduct, including interference by two managers and the misuse of a company vehicle. Previously, WASA denied his Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, citing confidentiality and the potential harm of disclosing sensitive information. Read more here

Accounting professionals urged to lead innovation, ESG integration

The Accounting profession must adapt to rapid technological and global changes, positioning itself as a leader in innovation and sustainability. So said Marissa Quashie, president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of TT (ICATT) at the 15th International Finance and Accounting Conference (AIFAC) at Hyatt Regency, Port of Spain, on November 21. The two-day conference brings together accounting and finance professionals, business leaders and innovators to explore trends and challenges in the industry. Read more here

 Reef tour operators not happy with jetty upgrade

Some reef tour operators in Tobago are not at all happy with recent upgrades to the Pigeon Point jetty. In an over six-minute video which has now gone viral on social media, operator of reef tour vessel Cool Runnings Ronny Elliott spoke out on his concerns. ‘No proper support’ “You must ask questions to the people who doing it every day before you come up with these ideas that you are doing. There is no proper support on these single iron rails; look they shaking the minute some people come and hold on to this, a little rough seas come, these will not last too long,” Elliott complained. ‘We cannot continue the lawlessness, carnage on our roads’ — President Ali warns reckless drivers

In recent months, the nation has witnessed a surge in road accidents leading to significant loss of lives and damage to public infrastructure. As such, President Dr. Irfaan Ali has issued a stern warning to reckless drivers, vowing to tackle the “lawlessness” on Guyana’s roadways with immediate and robust measures. “We cannot continue the carnage on our roads. We cannot continue the lawlessness on our roads,” President Ali announced in a live broadcast on Thursday with Attorney-General Anil Nandlall, SC, and senior officials of the Guyana Police Force. The meeting, convened in response to an alarming rise in road accidents and traffic violations, centred on three key issues: reckless driving, drunk driving, and the illegal use of sirens and emergency lights.
