Scary driver pulls baton

Scared that she might become another rape statistic, a San Juan woman jumped from a moving “PH” taxi on Tuesday after the driver began cursing and threatening her with a baton. A still traumatised Linda Asevero, 35, cautioned other women yesterday as she related the terror she felt after the man picked her up, veered off route and refused to stop the car when she began to ask pointed questions. 5,000 workers walk off jobs

THE actions of a man who jumped a fence and died in a tank of oil at a Petrotrin faci­lity in Point Fortin last week has led to more than 5,000 workers walking off their jobs, effectively shutting down the country's most important revenue-­generating resource. Read more here

Local Govt elections Nov 28

LOCAL Government elections will be held on November 28, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley announced yesterday. He said that the President was advised to issue a writ for the Local Government election with nomination day being Monday November 7, and the elections on Monday November 28. “So that now puts us into another period of heightened activity,” he said. Khan expects PNM to do better than 2013

CHAIRMAN of the People's National Movement (PNM) and campaign manager for the Local Government election Franklin Khan said yesterday the PNM expected to do “slightly better” than it did in the 2013 Local Government election. In that election, the party won 84 out of 136 seats and eight out of 14 corporations. Khan said it would be a “short and intense” campaign. Read more here

Land for pepper farmers

A GASPARILLO businessman says there is an “endless” market out there for the export of locally grown hot peppers, but, “we need to act swiftly before the market is lost.” He is inviting ten willing farmers to grow peppers on ten acres of land he has acquired to export said peppers to a foreign company. “I am really at a loss for words as to why we didn’t do this for many years before,” said Anil Ramjit who represented the Gasparillo Business Association at the Couva/Tabaquite/ Talparo Regional Corporation’s Local Economic Development Initiative on Wednesday. “This is where the government should invest.” Read more here

BVI Asian trade mission spends second day in Beijing

BEIJING, China -- During the second day of the BVI Asian Trade Mission’s stop in Beijing, premier and minister of finance, Dr Orlando Smith, and his delegation met with vice chairman Li Shihong and other senior members of the marketing and international cooperation departments of the China National Tourism Association (CNTA) to familiarise the organisation with the British Virgin Islands (BVI) as a tourism destination. FundSME Targets 500 For Funding Fair, Finalising Its Own Registration

Irish outfit FundSME is targeting 500 enterprises for a funding fair through which they can pitch ventures to a line-up of prospective backers. It's all to happen in one day in November, according to the matchmaker, which operates a web platform whose business model rests on the same objective - finding right-fit backers for small businesses or start-ups in search of capital. Director of FundSME Nollaig Fahy says the Jamaican FundSME platform has so far proved to be an effective tool to bring people together, using preset criteria. Read more here

Trump delivers harsh remarks on Clinton at charity dinner

Donald Trump abandoned decades of tradition Thursday night with a tough takedown of Hillary Clinton at an annual charity dinner that prompted booing of the Republican presidential nominee. Clinton's remarks, too, largely lacked the self-deprecating humor that is typical at the Al Smith dinner, which benefits Catholic charities and is often one of the final opportunities for presidential candidates to share a stage before the election. Russian warships pass through English Channel

A flotilla of Russian warships is passing through the English Channel en route to Syria.Two British naval ships are shadowing the vessels. The Ministry of Defence said they would be "man-marked every step of the way" while near UK waters. A Russian tug, believed to be in convoy with the taskforce, entered the channel first off the coast near Ramsgate. EU leaders have strongly condemned Russia's involvement in bombing the Syrian city of Aleppo. Read more here
