DPP: T&T becoming numb to murder

Citizens of Trinidad and Tobago are becoming numb to murder which demonstrates a breakdown in family life, says Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard, SC. He is urging youths to develop good character and contribute positively to nation building. Gaspard was the feature speaker yesterday at the annual prize-giving and award ceremony of the San Fernando Central Secondary School, his alma mater. The ceremony was held at the Southern Academy for the Performing Arts. This year's theme was “Moving Forward-Onward to Victory.” Read more here

Girls sweep President’s Medals

Priya Maraj of Lakshmi Girls’ Hindu College and Raquel Le Blanc of St Joseph’s Convent, Port-of-Spain, are this year's President’s Medal winners. Minutes after the announcement was made by Education Minister Anthony Garcia yesterday, both girls said they were “blessed and honoured.” Read more here

...Moonilal has a crush on me, says AG

“I am confident that I, Faris Al-Rawi, have nothing to worry about.” So stressed Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi yesterday, as he commented on the controversy surrounding the publication of photographs of his two children holding high-powered weapons. “I sleep well at night,” he said, adding he would not be distracted by false claims of Oropouche East MP Dr Roodal Moonilal. He also suggested he was being deliberately targeted because of the Government's efforts to combat white-collar crime. Read more here

MP: Al-Rawi must tell the truth

Oropouche East MP Dr Roodal Moonilal is sticking to his guns and demanding Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi tell the truth with respect to his children being pictured with high-powered guns. The former housing minister also called on the police to investigate what he maintains is a breach of the law. He is insisting as well Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley fire the Attorney General and appoint a tribunal to investigate the issue of the controversial photographs. Read more here

Samsung launches Smart HD TV

Technology giant Samsung International, launched its long-awaited Smart HD Television (SUHDTV) set, at the Court’s Megastore, El Socorro. The Samsung Smart HD television, which has been described by retailers as ‘The Screen of the Future’ has been on shelves in Courts outlets throughout Trinidad and Tobago, for months, but was only formally launched yesterday. Angelo Marconi, Product Manager in the division of Picture and Audio for Samsung Panama, delivered the product presentation of the Definition and said that the launch marked the culmination of almost two decades of research and innovation from the Samsung company. Marconi also expressed his satisfaction with Samsung’s continued partnership with Courts. Read more here

Hurricane Nicole lashes Bermuda with 115 mph winds and torrential rain

Hurricane Nicole moved out into the Atlantic on Thursday afternoon, after lashing Bermuda with 115 mph winds and torrential rain. According to minister of national security, Senator Jeffrey Baron, there were “significant” power outages throughout the island but there had been no reports so far of storm related fatalities or major injuries. Government schools closed on Wednesday at noon and will remain closed on Thursday and Friday. Government offices also closed early at 3.00 pm and were expected to remain closed on Thursday. UN health teams in Haiti respond to cholera outbreaks, prevent possible epidemic

With scattered outbreaks of cholera reported in the wake of the devastation wrecked by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti, the United Nations health agency has deployed field teams in the country to respond to the health situation and to prevent it from reaching epidemic proportions. According to a news release issued on Thursday by the UN World Health Organization (WHO), WHO and Pan American Health Organization’s (PAHO) disaster, health and logistic experts have been deployed to support the government's efforts against cholera outbreaks from the agencies’ offices in Washington DC, Haiti and a number of other locations. Thai king death: Thousands throng streets for funeral procession

Thousands of Thai mourners have lined the streets of Bangkok, as the body of King Bhumibol Adulyadej was moved from a hospital to the royal palace. The world's longest-reigning monarch died on Thursday aged 88 after years of ill health, sparking a national outpouring of grief. The government has declared a year-long official mourning period. Swing-state polls show Trump path to WH narrowing

A trio of state polls released this week show Hillary Clinton's northern "blue wall" holding, as she carries commanding leads across a series of key states. The polls -- taken after the release of a 2005 recording of Donald Trump talking in a sexually aggressive manner about women -- show Clinton leading in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. Coupled with Democrats' advantage in the Electoral College, the slate of polls suggests that only an extremely narrow path to the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency remains for Trump, who has staked his candidacy in part on flipping some traditionally Democratic states.
