Six year old sexually assaulted, teen in custody

Members of the Child Protection Unit were yesterday investigating the sexual assault of a six-year-old girl at her grandmother’s home in Diego Martin on Saturday. According to police reports, the girl’s mother was doing chores when she went to look for her daughter to give her lunch. She found, in one of the bedrooms, a 16 year old male relative sexually assaulting the child. It is alleged the teen, when he realised he was caught, cursed the child’s mother and ran away. Read more here

T&T’s oldest woman dies at 111

Vivian Reese, believed to be the oldest woman in T&T, passed away peacefully at her home last Friday. Reese, formerly Cowan, died at the age of 111 at her Tabaquite Road, Rio Claro home. Reese’s great grandson David Cowan Jr told the T&T Guardian that she was in the company of her adopted son Lincoln and her caregiver at the time of her death. She was also surrounded by pictures of her family, Cowan Jr added. Read more here

Film Festival promotes Spanish cultures

Thirteen embassies have teamed up to showcase films dedicated to promoting and increasing awareness of Latin American and Spanish cultures. The NGC Bocas Lit Fest, in partnership with The UWI and the embassies of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, México, Panamá, Peru, Venezuela and Spain, will host the third Latin American and Caribbean Literary Film Festival, CineLit, a festival of films from Latin America and Spain based on literary works. AG requests Immigration Report

Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi has said he will be requesting a full report on the deportation of 82 Venezuela nationals on Saturday. In a call late last night, the AG added that he will issue a media statement with further details Monday. On Saturday, National Security Minister Edmund Dillon said he was assured by the division that all the deportees had willingly agreed to their deportation. Read more here

Roodal wants HDC moratorium

Oropouche East MP Dr Roodal Moonilal says many of the 352 tenants who are in arrears in four Housing Development Corporation (HDC) communities are people who have lost their jobs in recent times. His comment comes on the heels of a statement in Parliament on Friday by acting Prime Minister Colm Imbert, that the HDC had increased resources in a bid to recover the arrears and also to set up payment plans to help those who find it difficult to pay. Kamla wants probe

Two international companies boast of putting PNM in power: Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is calling on the Commissioner of Police and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to launch a criminal investigation into the relationship between the People’s National Movement (PNM) and two international companies which boasted of working to get the party into Government. Focus on research by UWI

The corporate community needs to pay more attention to research since findings can lead to better decision-making. That was the call made by Acolla Cameron, Head of the Management Studies Department, at UWI, which hosted its second Research Week. Cameron said decisions should be based on data and actual research conducted by academics or non-academics to assist in making informed decisions. Read more here

Deals Sealed - Expo Jamaica 2018 Ends On High Note

With an almost capacity crowd, including Prime Minister Andrew Holness, attending yesterday's final day of Expo Jamaica 2018 at the National Area and National Indoor Sports Centre, satisfied Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) officials said that many exhibitors had sold out stock, and buyers were still sealing deals in the final hours. The prime minister toured both venues - which offered an array of products and services - and chatted with exhibitors and visitors alike. Read more here

South Korea stops blasting propaganda as summit looms

South Korea's military announced Monday it has turned off loudspeakers that blast propaganda across the highly militarized border with North Korea, in an apparent gesture of goodwill ahead of Friday's historic summit between the two nations' leaders. The speakers, which can be heard for miles on the North's side, have been playing on a regular basis since January 2016, when they were turned back on as a response to North Korea's fourth nuclear test. They broadcast Korean pop music, news and weather forecasts -- snippets of everyday life in the South that are strictly off limits for North Koreans. Read more here

Paris attack suspect Salah Abdeslam jailed in Belgium

Salah Abdeslam, the sole surviving suspect from the 2015 Paris attacks, has been jailed for 20 years in Belgium over a gunfight that led to his arrest. Abdeslam, 28, and co-defendant Sofien Ayari were both convicted of terror-related charges of attempted murder. Ayari, 24, was also given a 20-year sentence. Both fired on officers who raided a flat in Brussels in 2016. Abdeslam is being held in a jail in France and is due to face trial there over the Paris attacks themselves. He had refused to answer questions from the judge in the trial in Brussels, and eventually refused to attend the hearings. Read more here
